Author Interview: Roger Radford

About the Author:

I am a British thriller writer and former foreign correspondent in the Middle East. I am in the process of uploading my backlist (which was self-published way back when it wasn’t fashionable) to Kindle. The Winds of Kedem was an international bestseller, and the film rights were sold for Schreiber’s Secret. Cry of the Needle and High Heels & 18 Wheels will be available shortly.  My blog and website (a work in progress) is at http://www.radford46.wordpress.com

I was a proud Indie 20 years ago, and now I am a proud Indie again, thanks to the ebook revolution.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I usually think of the end and work towards it. I have never suffered from writer’s block.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

When writing thrillers, one must draw a line between too much characterisation at the expense of pace, and vice versa.

What is your favourite food?

My wife’s sesame-covered schnitzels.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Morning.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

Tel Aviv, Israel, my second home and the world’s most vibrant city.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Yes, apart from my latest medical thriller, which is UK based.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Yes. Baroque, mainly Vivaldi or Bach.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

The Winds of Kedem: a story about an Israeli spy’s bid to thwart an Arab nuclear  plot to destroy Israel;

Schreiber’s Secret: A thriller about a Nazi sadist who lives a double life in order to conceal his identity, the Jew who vows to bring him to justice, and two reporters chasing a double murder trail that leads to the Old Bailey and the 'trial of the century'.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

Never to believe what most mainstream publishers tell you. The industry drowns in platitudes.

Is there anything you would do differently?

No. I became the most successful Indie publisher in the UK twenty years ago. I’m now trying to do it again on Kindle at the age of 66.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

My English teacher at school, and Stefan Zweig, IMHO the finest author of the 20th century.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Draw from your experiences, and don’t be afraid.

What are three words that describe you?

Confident, determined and altruistic.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

Beware of Pity and everything else written by Stefan Zweig.

Blurb of your latest release or coming soon book

SCHREIBER’S SECRET: Most Nazi sadists went to the grave with their secrets. Who was Hans Schreiber - and what was his terrible secret?

Crime reporter Mark Edwards and his colleague Danielle Green wade deep in red herrings and a twisting and turning plot as they seek to discover the terrible secret of a Nazi sadist who has continued his murdering ways in modern London. The story switches from a wartime transit camp in Czechoslovakia to contemporary Germany; from a London suburb to the Old Bailey, the world's most famous criminal court, where two men strive to claim that the other is the real Hans Schreiber.

Schreiber's Secret is a gripping tale of unimaginable horror and hatred revolving around a question of identity. Who is the real Hans Schreiber?

Book Spotlight: Crashing the Congressman's Wedding by Elley Arden

Crashing the Congressman's Wedding
by Elley Arden
Contemporary Romance
Crimson Romance Publishing
Amazon

Blurb:

Alice Cramer is tired of being pitied for her family’s transgressions, so she resolves to break out of the gutter and into the spotlight. As long as her local congressman can forget about their checkered past and help her secure a federal grant to open Harmony Falls Little Theatre, she’ll be the brightest star in town. But when Alice stands up in church and stops the congressman’s wedding, she dives headfirst into fresh scandal.

Why is Harmony Fall’s golden boy, Justin Mitchell, speeding down the interstate sans a new wife but with the local drama queen he’s been trying his whole life to avoid? Alice Cramer may have saved him the hassle of an arranged marriage to a woman he didn’t love, but she’s put a business transaction big enough to save an entire town in jeopardy–not to mention his reputation.

Soon Alice and Justin are dredging up and indulging in an attraction that threatens all their dreams and aspirations. But what if life together is the dream that matters most?

Excerpt:

Alice jumped a wave, and Justin was assaulted by a flash of creamy skin and black lace. She was swimming in her underwear. Catching sight of a pile of clothes out of water’s reach, Justin shook his head. Apparently, she had ditched her dress. Why was he not surprised?

“What are you doing?” he called above the surf.

She flashed him a smile he hadn’t seen in years. “I’ve never been to the ocean.”

His untucked shirt tails whipped in the wind, and with the strength of his hands he fought the chaos. “I guess that explains it.”

She stayed smiling, considering him with the same hypnotic eyes he knew as a child. Back then, he wondered what she saw when she looked at him. Now, he was afraid to know the answer.

“I’m going to get the bags and the dog out of the car, and then I’ll bring you a towel. Be careful. No further. You hear? In fact, stay closer to the beach. The undertow is strong, and I’d like to avoid another rescue.”

A few steps up the beach and her wail hit his back. “I don’t need to be rescued.”

But she did. Somebody had to keep her from making rash decisions, like stopping weddings and swimming in the ocean half-dressed. He slowed his pace and closed his eyes. That someone couldn’t—shouldn’t—be him. On an inhale, he opened his eyes and returned to the surf. “Fine. No more rescues.”

“Good, because I’m not a baby. I can take care of myself. Stop telling me what to do. Stop treating me like you’re my father or my brother. You’re not. You’re just a guy. I’m just a girl. And you make life too complicated.” She raised her arms to her side and fell backwards into the sea.

Justin’s heartbeat quickened as he searched the choppy water, waiting for her to surface. Her father died an alcoholic and her brother looked destined to follow. Not being lumped in their category was a good thing, but where did that leave him?

Relief flooded him when her head broke the surface. She pushed soggy curls from her face, and raising her arms over head, spun until a wave knocked her off her feet. She was definitely not a baby. But if he was just a guy and she was just a girl, then bringing her with him was an even bigger risk. He had obligations, expectations and an image to uphold. In trying to avoid a scene at the church, he’d put himself in one hell of a compromising situation.

Book Spotlight: The Memory Plot by D.E. Carver

The Memory Plot
by D.W. Carver
Psychological Suspense
Amazon

Blurb:

Two years after the car crash that killed her family, mental health counsellor Jill Garvin’s memories of the events surrounding the tragedy are beginning to resurface. And with them, a painful and ugly secret that will shatter the way Jill views her late husband. The threat of reality may be more than Jill’s fragile mind can handle. But handle it she must, because a much darker force is at work: a man who would do anything to keep her past a secret, including destroy the new family Jill has found for herself.

Excerpt:

Jill Garvin had been promising herself a skinny dip all week. Now that her sister’s children spent more time with their mother’s new boyfriend than at the villa, wearing the bikini seemed dumb, veering towards old maidish, especially in this heat. She looked down at herself. Her body was still okay. Nothing sagged too much, so there was no excuse really. In fact, none at all. Sarah walked past her to the pool’s edge. Jill glanced up as the girl dipped a toe in the water. Then of course there was comparison, but her niece’s bare bottom would make a monk sob, so that wasn’t realistic.

Sarah turned towards her and asked, “Are you coming in?”

“Maybe later.” Jill pointed. “You’ll give yourself a rash if you keep on.”

Sarah peered down at her sculpted pubic hair. “It looked crooked from this angle when I got undressed. I’m still not sure.”

“It’s not crooked,” Jill said. “It wasn’t yesterday or the day before.”

Sarah rubbed at the crease between groin and thigh, grinning. “If you’d let me go to that salon in the first place, I wouldn’t have all this aggravation.” Jill shook her head. “That was never going to happen, kid.”

Sarah offered the innocent face. “They’re professionals. It’s just like going to a normal hairdresser, only a bit lower down.” She put a finger under her chin. “Pretty please with a cherry on top?”

Jill sighed. “I’m not doing this again, my little ‘butter-wouldn’t-melt.’ Now chuck your skinny self in the pool before the flies smell that nasty body oil you bought. We don’t want them carrying you off to their lair again.”

Sarah pulled a face, saying, “You are so gross,” turned, and jumped into the water.

Jill raised a hand against the spray. The mobile phone on the small white plastic table beside her, made its three-tone demand. She picked it up, read the display, and pressed the unit alive, realising that she didn’t want to bring her employers into their life right now but had no choice. And while Creel was just a higher-up employee than herself, he was at the sharp end of minding billionaires and felt like management.

In answer to her “Hi,” Creel said, “Hi yourself. How’s tricks?”

“Tricks is tolerable.

“It’s been a while. Has anything interesting happened?”

Jill watched her niece swim across the pool using a strong, confident breaststroke. “Not really. Sarah and I are sunning ourselves a lot. My sister is off with the illustrator more than she’s here and Prue’s made a new friend. We don’t see her much either. In fact, hardly at all over these last two weeks.”

“A new friend?” Creel asked, voice a long way from casual.

“Of the horizontal persuasion: French, gorgeous and of course, female.”

Creel’s “Oh” lasted too long. Jill smiled but didn’t speak. Eventually, he dropped words into the building silence, tone uncertain. “Is that a problem?”

“Are you asking if I’m jealous?”

“Well…”

“We were never a couple,” Jill said. “I thought about it for a while after we left England, but decided my feelings towards Prue were mostly loneliness and reaction to all that violence and fear. You know, needing to cling to someone for comfort; looking for an adult to love who would love me back. I’m glad she’s found a partner.”

“Fair enough.” Jill could almost hear him thinking. Then he went on, “So how many tickets to England will you need now?”

“Rachel and the kids will be staying in France for certain if all goes well,” Jill said. “I don’t know about Prue, but I can tell you for sure by the end of the month. Will that be a problem, leaving it late?”

“No, not at all,” Creel said. “The house is ready now. Sarah’s university course is set and I can buy plane tickets right up to the day.”

Jill watched her niece climb the pool ladder, water glistening on her slim body as he talked.

Creel asked, “What was that?”

Jill frowned. “I didn’t speak.”

“You said something about law.”

Jill shook her head, took the phone from her ear to look at it as if that might help, then put it back. “The sun must be getting to me. I was watching Sarah climb out of the pool, barefoot, as they say, from the neck down and I was thinking there should be a law against looking that good. Guess I said it aloud.”

“Oh… all right.”

Jill wanted to laugh at the caution in his voice but said, “I talk to myself sometimes, always have. It’s not PTSD over nearly losing Sarah and my sister, or dwelling on the spooky past or anything like that.” Sarah turned towards her and waved. For a moment it looked… Jill shivered; blinking hard then closed her eyes tight.

Sarah called into the spark-edged darkness, “The water’s great! Get your cossie off!”

Jill opened her eyes with an effort. It was just Sarah, the beautiful, funny, life-filling girl who kept her heart warm.

Jill said into the phone, “Sarah wants me in there with her. So if there’s nothing else?”

“No, can’t think of anything. I’ll call you again in a few days.”

Jill disconnected on his last word, dropped the phone on her lap, and lay back, feeling as if she might need to hang onto the lounger to keep from floating away.

Sarah yelled, “No sleeping! Get in here!”

An excerpt from chapter 2, Clay’s POV…

“D’you ever wonder,” Julia’s fingers glided along her cat’s back, blazing a path into its fur, “if there’s a place so far away, it just has to be perfect? That –” she sighed, “that maybe if we traveled far enough, we could – I don’t know, we could maybe cut around the bull shit and the lies and just live the life we’re supposed to live? Free of everything but the truth and ourselves?”

Clay tilted his face toward the stars. “Maybe. If there’s a place far enough away.”

“Sometimes I feel like there has to be.” She pulled her gown around her legs, letting the material drift against her skin. “Otherwise, what the hell else is there?”

“Mrow,” agreed the cat, nuzzling its cheek against Clay’s hand.

“Nice cat.” Falling onto the deck, Clay scratched behind the creature’s ears. “What’s its name?”

“Pandora.” Julia pushed herself to her elbows, causing the feline to fall onto her lap with a startled mrow. She smoothed her apologies against its fur. “Named her after a story my mom told me once. When I was a little girl.”

His heart sprinted as he stared into her eyes: stained with starlight and sparking with secrets, they grabbed hold and wouldn’t let go. “A story?”

“Hmm.” She nodded. “About a girl who just couldn’t take no for an answer. She opened this box she wasn’t even supposed to touch, and let out all the dark, evil things of the world. Anger. Jealousy. Spite. Malevolence. Everything bad. Until she got smart and slammed the lid shut, trapping just one thing inside. You know what that was?”

“Tell me.”

Julia tilted her face to the heavens. “Hope,” she murmured, her answer mingling with Clay’s whispered: “Hope.”

A crease formed between her brows, and she lowered her gaze to skewer Clay with her fiery stare. “Thought you hadn’t heard the story, Lumince?”

Clay shrugged. “I’ve heard it. I just wanted to hear you tell it.”

The starlight faded from Julia’s eyes and she reached for her bottle of champagne. “Aren’t you breaking the rules? Coming out here to talk to me?”

Clay smothered a grimace. “Rules?”

“Yeah, you know.” Curling her hand around the bottle’s neck, she lifted it to her mouth in a fluid yank. Her throat spasmed around the rush of alcohol; plunking the bottle onto the deck, she moistened her lips and leveled him with her stare. “Should any vampire be caught keeping company with a human,” she air-quoted the law with her fingertips, “that creature will suffer no less than two years in a Reaver-run penitentiary and –”

“And no less than thirty lashes of a pinewood whip.” Clay tugged his fingers through his curls, swallowing a sigh as Pandora curled onto his lap. “I know the law.”

“Then why are you out here talking to me?”

There was a dare in her eyes, in the way she pushed her fingertips against his hand; capturing one between his fingers, he held it in his grasp. “Last I checked, Reavers didn’t exactly qualify as human. Or have the laws changed again?”

Julia arched a brow. “Nice,” she drawled, twisting her fingertip from his hand. It fell against his arm, where it burned her touch into his skin. “Do you talk like this to all the girls, or am I just special?”

Clay met her gaze and took a breath. “I’m still trying to figure that one out.”

She blinked. “Well, let me know when you do. ‘Cause I’m just dyin’ to find out.”

She tilted her head for another drink, and Clay watched as the neckline of her dress fell open, revealing the Reaver mark etched into the skin below her collarbone. Unbidden, his fingers drifted to the design: a jagged “R” seared within a circle, smooth against his touch. “Did that hurt?”

He thought he heard her breath catch; he knew he saw her eyes widen as her gaze drifted to his hand.

“Enjoying the feel?”

“Sorry.” Clay yanked his hand away, his cheeks burning against the warm September breeze. “I just…I’ve never seen one this close before.”

“You mean my cattle brand?” She skimmed the mark with her hand. Her forehead creased and her mouth puckered as she stared at the fingers he’d touched her with seconds before. “It’s okay, I guess. It’s just – I’ve never had anyone touch it before. It’s . . . kinda weird.” Her hand brushed against his arm, causing his breath to catch. “But it didn’t hurt. Or, it did for a minute, when I first got the flash.”

“The flash?”

“Yeah.” She nodded. “It’s like…a moment, when you know you were chosen. A searing pain, and then you get the mark. It happened when I was thirteen. A full year before any of my other friends were chosen, which really kinda sucked.” A sip from the bottle, washed down with a tuck of her mouth. She smacked her lips together. “But it’s okay. I’ve gotten over it.”

“Wow.” Clay raised his brows.

“Yeah. I guess.” Shivering, Julia swigged another long drink. He took the opportunity to caress her hand with his thumb, sliding it beneath his palm.

She shifted until she was sitting, her gaze drifting to his mouth. “I wonder…”

“What do you wonder, Jewels?”

Her eyelids fluttered at the endearment, a spark of surprise sizzling through her gaze. “I – I wonder if …”
Julia’s free hand glided into the air, and she skimmed her fingertips against his lips. “Do you mind?”

Clay swallowed and leaned forward as her touch seared itself into his skin. “D-do I – Oh.” He blinked. “Oh, yeah. Um, okay. Sure.” He slid open his mouth to reveal a pair of gleaming white fangs.

She smoothed her fingers over their tips, wincing as they pricked her skin. “They’re sharp.”

“It’s okay.” Flipping his hand, he captured her fingers between his own. “I don’t bite, and I never hurt.”

He was caught within her stare, pulled within the molten fire flashing through her eyes. His heart dipped as she yanked her hand from his touch, a guarded mask slipping over her features. A second later, and the bottle was at her lips, the rush of liquid flooding her throat. He caught the bottom with his hand, causing her to lower it until it hovered between them both. “Why do you drink so much?”

“Why do you care?”

“Actually,” he lowered his hand and she plunked the bottle onto the deck, “I guess I’m trying to figure out why you pretend so hard like you don’t.”

“Maybe it’s easier that way.”

“Yeah, maybe.” Clay scratched behind Pandora’s ears, making the creature purr. “Or maybe you’re just too scared to try it any other.” Her eyes flashed fire, but he caught her hand before she could flail him with her words, flipping it to run his fingertips along the lines of her palm. “I told you. You don’t have to be afraid of me. I don’t hurt, and I never bite.”

“No.” She ripped her hand away. “You only touch.”

Zombies, Angels, and Pixies. Oh my! Don't miss out on the first book in the new "Sexy Witches" series by Bestselling Author Charity Parkerson.

Short Excerpt:

“This place flipping sucks,” Tam said, using her whiniest voice.

She didn’t get to visit with her friend, Lena, very often since she lived amongst the humans, and Tam was stuck living in the Hall of the Gods. She was taking full advantage of the rare social call by laying all her problems on the Seer as thick as possible. “I mean, look around,” she added, gearing up for a full rant.

“There’s not one man in this joint I’d be willing to sleep with.”

Lena’s bright pink hair, which stood out in a spike above her head, tilted from side to side as she did as Tam ordered. Her eyes widened, showing her confusion.

“Are you insane?”

Disbelief laced her words. Lifting one beautifully manicured finger, she pointed out a blond angel that was guarding a nearby door. “What about that one?” Before Tam could answer, Lena added, “or that one?”
Tam didn’t bother glancing in the redhead’s direction. She knew without looking that both men wore matching black kilts and nothing else. Their golden muscular bodies were a common sight in the Heavens.
“Bloody freaking hell, Lena. All these guys are three feet taller than me. What am I supposed to do with them, I ask you? Their,” she made a swirling gesture with her index finger, searching for the right term. “Pricks. Yes,” she said with a nod, deciding that she liked that word. “They are probably the size of my leg. I’d be killed.”

A snort of laughter escaped Lena, but she covered her mouth as if attempting to hold it in. Tam’s nerve endings lit up at the sound. Most people believe that chanting their belief in fairies will cause one to grow strong, but in truth laughter was the key to pixie power. A day with Lena was equivalent to a day at the spa for Tam. Not only was Lena the clumsiest immortal in all the realms, she was also a regular hoot.

Feeling encouraged, she grew even more outrageous. “Take that one, for example.” Tam nodded toward a dark-haired angel that stood a few inches taller than the rest. “Notice that his kilt falls to his shins instead of his knees,” she pointed out.

Lena nodded. “I did think that was odd, but then again, what isn’t here?”

It was Tam’s turn to snort. “Well, his is not a fashion statement. I heard that he tried wearing the standard uniform when he first arrived, but everyone got sick of seeing that huge one-eyed monster slapping his kneecaps every step that he took. Mistress Katrina finally made him wear a longer one.”

Lena openly gawked at the man in question. Leaning over in her chair, she tried to peek under his pleat before losing her balance and almost landing on her face.

Catching her stare, the man began to inch the plaid upward as if fully prepared to relieve Lena’s curiosity.
“Thomas!” Tam cried, admonishing the wicked angel.

With a wink in Lena’s direction, he turned away, but Lena didn’t look the least bit ashamed as she attempted to right herself.

“Too bad,” she sighed. “I’ve never seen a knee-slapping monster before. Why don’t you just leave?”

Wasn’t that the million-dollar question? Tam’s wings drooped, mimicking her inner deflation. “I want a normal man,” she confessed to Lena. “An ordinary man who won’t squash my twat,” she added miserably.

On an ideal day I go for a run or do yoga, but if I had a bad sleep I will go to the university and do my math research until lunch time. I don’t like writing in the morning. I like to let my juices simmer for a while, but not too long, so I find mid-day is the best.

Starting a writing session looks like this:

I have a black box full of small sheets. These are the growing outlines, character and setting sketches, maps, and world-building notes I keep organized and add to every time I discover something new about my story. I have rough sketches for future books—basically anything as it comes to me—including the arc for the current tale I’m telling (The Pact, and A Thousand Roads, its sequel). Someday this box may become a filing cabinet, but I hope to have an office by the time that happens.

When I start writing, I spread out all the sheets I might need. Usually I spend about ten minutes going over the outlines and looking at character profiles. This helps me to connect to the story. I’ll open my manuscript on the computer and start reading over old work. Sometimes, if I got my run in early or have one of those inspiring days, I already have sentences, ideas, or dialogues in my head waiting to get scribbled down, and this gives me a good starting point. Usually, though, I have a hard time, and don’t end up writing anything that doesn’t get deleted until I’ve been at the computer for about twenty minutes.

I write slow, think long about what I write, polish, tweak, what have you. That way, revision for me isn’t about fixing up lazy writing, it’s about addressing larger things like inconsistent plots or character motives, development issues, poor pacing, reordering exposition—things like that. In an hour (typical session) I usually write about 500 words worth keeping. I’ve done 2400 once, and that took me all night.

A day in my writing life always has its rewards. I feel like I know my story a little better, like it’s closer to the form I’m trying to get it into, even if that means I leave a session aware of a huge flaw that needs to be addressed tomorrow. I have a hard time getting started, but when it’s time to stop I don’t want to. A day in my writing life always ends with me eager for the next one.

Graeme Brown is has been enchanted by the epic fantasy genre since he was a child, and consequently he started creating his own world with its stories at the age of thirteen. Influenced by writers like J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and George R. R. Martin, he has finally brought the first of those stories to life with his debut title, a short story called The Pact—48 pages that will whisk you away to a dark, medieval fantasy world with gritty realism.   When he’s not writing, he can be found exploring number theory problems or writing computer programs, training for a marathon, or unwinding in a yoga hot room. He has also explored other facets of art, both as a hobby and a profession, including vector graphics, pen and ink, classical piano, and web design. Despite being a full time student and a junior editor for Champagne Books, he makes sure to do a little writing every day. He is presently busy with the first of many sequels to The Pact, A Thousand Roads.   Website: http://www.graemebrownart.com

Author Interview: Terry Towers Insatiable Reads Blog Tour & Giveaway

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I'm all about letting everything flow naturally. I hate planning. Hate. Hate. Hate. That is part of the reason why I usually have a half-dozen books in various stages of completion. I'll write until it's halfway through, hit a wall, and then go on to something else.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

They do frequently. LoL.

What is your favourite food?

Pizza. You just can't go wrong with pizza. But it's gotta be meat. I'm a meat-atarian all the way.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I can't function until noon - at least. I'm a full-time writer and my workday normally starts around 6pm until between 2am-4am. I used to work at a hotel reservation center, working overnights. I worked there for eight years so I think all those years trained me to sleep in the mornings. No matter how much I try to change to a "normal" routine, it doesn't seem to happen for me.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I'm actually about to embark on my dream vacation. I'm going to be spending the month of August touring Europe. I fly into Madrid, Spain on the 8th of August and fly out of Brussels, Belgium on the 4th of September. I'll be taking my 11 year old son with me and we have lots of fun things planned, such as a helicopter ride over Paris, France and a tour of the Vatican. It's going to be amazing. A dream trip to remember. Actually "I'm excited" doesn't even begin to describe it.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Not usually. I like to keep my characters in places I know about. Generally my books take place in either Portland, Me, Boston, Mass or New York City.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Nope. Music distracts me and I tend to make too many mistakes. I usually have the television turned on to a reality show of some sort. Reality shows are good since I never really have to pay attention to them to know what's happening. :)

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

An Heir For The Billionaire is my latest release. It was originally meant to be a breeding erotica story, but morphed into something so much more. Instead, I would like to think this is an inspirational love story about hope, forgiveness and rediscovering what is most important in life.

The heroine of the story, Katrina Alexander is a woman stuck in a rut. She's working as a server for a hotel and embarrassed that at twenty-eight years old she hasn't accomplished much with her life. When her high school reunion comes around she considers not even going because she doesn't want people to see that she hasn't succeeded. With some prompting from her best friend, Farrah Glover, she decides to go, a part of her longing to see her former high school love, Damon Garratt.

The hero is Damon Garratt. He's a man that has it all. Money, power and it would appear the world in the palm of his hand. But that's hardly the case. His world is rocked to its core when he discovers he has lung cancer and may only have a year to live. He begins to evaluate his life thus far and realizes that despite the empire he's built around him, his world is empty of what is most important in life. An invitation to his ten year high school reunion makes him realize that he had the most important thing in life already and was foolish enough to let it go, so he travels back to his hometown of Bangor, Maine, in search of redemption.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

There has been an insane amount of learning from when I began to self-publish back in May of 2012. I knew nothing about editing, how to find an editor, how to create cover art and so forth. Virtually every aspect of the business I had to teach myself, but I was diligent and it has paid off more than I could have ever dreamed it would.

Is there anything you would do differently?

Not a thing.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Most of my stories are either based on things I've experienced myself or fantasies I've harboured. My heroines reflect me in many ways. My heroes always reflect the type of man I've always dreamed of being with.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Read, read and read some more. Pick a niche that you enjoy and read a wide variety of authors in that niche. When it comes to writing, reading others work keeps your fresh. I try to read either a novel, or several novellas a week.

What are three words that describe you?

Introverted, Optimistic, Easy-going

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

Before I started writing erotic romance I studied other authors. Selena Kitt, Tawny Taylor and Felicity Heaton were/are my favourites. I read through a good chunk of their catalogues before I started writing.

Excerpt:

The Hidden Chamber In The Great Sphinx

Chapter 5

The rest of the school year crept by for Cliff. He hadn't realized how much he was looking forward to his upcoming sabbatical until he got back from Cairo and went back to work. Talking about Egypt and being in Egypt were a far cry from one another, and the short time he'd spent there made him want to be back immediately.

He was in one of his afternoon classes giving a lecture, and he kept glancing at the clock.

"The Giza plateau is a mile square and was leveled by human hands. The plateau is 130 feet above the Nile Valley. It is only half a degree off from being perfectly level. Any questions so far?" Cliff asked his students as he paused in his lecture to make sure he wasn't losing them. A student raised his arm, and Cliff pointed to him.

"Professor, I understand why the Egyptians made the pyramids, but what was the purpose of the Great Sphinx?"

"That's a good question, Peter. The Great Sphinx guards the pyramids of Giza," Cliff told the student and pointed to another student who had her arm in the air.

"Dr. Post, what exactly is a sphinx? I've always thought it was, like, a cat," the young lady wanted to know. Some of her classmates giggled.

"Settle down, guys. That's a good question, too. Does anyone know the answer to Stephanie's question?" Cliff looked pointedly at some of the students who'd giggled when Stephanie asked her question. "You, there. Thomas. You seemed to be very amused by Stephanie's question. Should we take it that you know the answer?"

"Well, isn't it, like, I mean, doesn't it have the body of a lion and the head of a man? I think it's something like that," Thomas said and the smile was gone from his face now that he found himself in the hot seat.

"Correct," Cliff told Thomas. "The word sphinx comes from an Egyptian phrase which means 'living image' or statue. It is a sculpture carved out of a sandstone knoll. The Great Sphinx is 240 feet long, just a little under 14 feet wide and stands 66 feet high. It wears a Pharaoh's headdress, which is denoted by the cobra on the forehead.

"The Sphinx's nose was shot off with a cannon by Napoleon's troops and is now housed in the British Museum. At one time, the Great Sphinx was painted dark red. The eyes were painted black, and the headdress was painted white. The Sphinx is situated so that it faces the rising sun on June 21st, the summer solstice.

"The face of the Great Sphinx was analyzed and compared to the face on the Louvre sphinx of pharaoh Amenenhet II. The similarities were said to be profound. Both faces are full and broad and slope downward over the cheekbones. Subsequently, the face on the Great Sphinx is believed to be the likeness of Amenenhet II. Are there any questions?"

Cliff looked around the room and realized that many of the students weren't paying attention to his lecture. Some were doodling and a few in the back of the room had their heads down on their desks. He was grateful that at least Stephanie, Thomas and Peter seemed to be interested in what he was talking about, and he smiled at each of them in turn. Cliff continued his lecture.

"There is a theory that the Great Sphinx was a statue of the Egyptian God Anubis in the Old Kingdom. Anubis was the god of the dead and mummification. He was placed on the Giza plateau to guard the Giza necropolis. The proponents of this theory believe that the body of the Great Sphinx is the body of a dog and not the body of a lion.

"There is evidence that the Sphinx was recarved in the Middle Kingdom by the pharaoh Amenenhet II in his own image. The head of the Sphinx is disproportionate to the body of the Sphinx. It is believed that the head of the Great Sphinx was much larger than it is now. Behind the Great Sphinx lies the Great Pyramid. Yes, Stephanie," Cliff said when he saw the young lady's arm in the air.

"Which pyramid is the biggest, Dr. Post?" Stephanie asked.

"The largest of the pyramids on the Giza plateau is the Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Kheops (Khufu). It is almost 486 feet tall. The pyramid's base occupies 13 acres and is said to represent the Equator. The apex of the pyramid deviates a half a degree from True North and is said to represent the Northern Hemisphere. The Great Pyramid was built with two and a half million blocks of limestone, some of which weighed 15 tons. That is more stone than can be found in all the churches, chapels and cathedrals built in England since 33 A.D.

"It is postulated that four mud ramps were erected to build the pyramid, and it took 2,500 men to construct it. The king's sarcophagus is one inch wider than the Ascending Corridor which leads to the King's Chamber toward the center of the pyramid. The King's Chamber, which is 19'1" high, 34'4" long and 17'2" wide, was to be the interment location of the pharaoh. It, however, is empty except for a large sarcophagus of rose granite. Archeologists believe that since the sarcophagus is wider than the chamber it must have been built in. Who can tell me how many sides there are to the Great Pyramid?"

"Four," Peter answered quickly.

"Ah, one would think that, wouldn't they, Peter? However, the Great Pyramid's core is concave which makes the Great Pyramid an eight-sided figure. This concavity divides each of the four faces of the pyramid in half. This feature can only be seen from the air, and the first person to record seeing it was a British Air Force pilot by the name of P. Groves, who flew over the Great Pyramid in 1940. Yes, Thomas?" Cliff paused to acknowledge Thomas who had raised his arm into the air.

"Dr. Post, I read something odd in the book, and it didn't make much sense to me. It said something about a Queen's Chamber that was built, too, but am I mistaken that it wasn't actually for burying the queen of the Pharaoh?" Thomas' brow was furrowed as he asked the question.

"You're correct, Thomas. It wasn't for the burial of the queen. The name is somewhat misleading. The Queen's Chamber in the Great Pyramid was built as an alternative resting place for the pharaoh in the event that the King's Chamber was not completed at the time of the pharaoh's death. If the King's Chamber was completed on time, then the Queen's Chamber would be used to house a statue of the pharaoh's ka. Does anyone know what that is? Yes, Jacob?" Cliff pointed to another student who had finally decided to start paying attention.

"The ka was the pharaoh's essence," Jacob said confidently.

"That is correct, Jacob. After death, the pharaoh's khat (corpse) was mummified. The ka or spiritual double can be thought of as the personality or life force of the pharaoh. The ba was another part of the total person. The khaibut was the pharaoh's shadow, and it was associated with the ba. The ren was a person's name. You should be writing these terms down, class. It's possible you may see them on the final exam." Cliff paused as there was pronounced movement among the students as they took out paper and began to write. Cliff chuckled inwardly. He knew the mention of the final exam would make his lecture more interesting to his students.

Before continuing, Cliff took a few moments to repeat the information he'd just shared with his class, so the stragglers could write down all the terms. Once he was satisfied that they'd all had a chance to catch up, Cliff continued his lecture.

"The story goes that after his death, the ka of the pharaoh was put on a scale and weighed against an ostrich feather by the god Maat. If the pharaoh's heart was lighter than the ostrich feather, it meant that the pharaoh could enter the afterlife. Even in death, the ka would continue to need sustenance, so the family left behind by the deceased pharaoh would continue to nourish it with food and water. Are there any questions about the Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Kheops?" Cliff paused but no one raised their arms to ask questions.

"Before we run out of time today, let me quickly talk about the other pyramids. Again, you need to be writing down the terms I mention, because you'll probably see them on the final examination. Now then... The Second Pyramid was built for the Pharaoh Khephren (Khafre) and is 446 feet tall. It is made of massive limestone blocks faced inside and out with slabs of red granite. It is easily identifiable by its layers of casing stones. The Second Pyramid measures 78 million cubic feet.

"The Third Pyramid of Giza was built for the Pharaoh Mykerinus (Menkaure). At 215 feet tall, it is much smaller than the other two pyramids. The first 15 meters of this pyramid are pink granite, and the rest is limestone. Menkaure's sarcophagus was made of basalt and was lost at sea while being transported to the British museum.

"The Pharaoh Menkaure was a much more beneficent ruler than his two predecessors, Kheops and Khafre. Menkaure was known as a good king with a mild mannered disposition. Kheops and Khafre were resented by their subjects, because they enslaved their citizens and required them to labor at massive building projects. The three pyramids form a Pytharean triangle and are aligned with the three stars in Orion's belt. Moreover, the three pyramids and the Great Sphinx are actually parts of a whole which are connected by interlocking golden angles. These golden angles measure 26 degrees, 33minutes and 54 seconds. The golden angle is found in all four corners of the Great Pyramid, all four corners of Khephren pyramid and in two corners of the Mykerinus pyramid," Cliff said as he paused and looked at the clock. He was out of time.

"That's all we have time for today, class. Make sure you finish reading chapters 23 and 24 in the book, and I'll pick up where I left off in the next class."

When all the students had left the room, Cliff released a long sigh. He stuffed his notes in his briefcase and walked out of the building. Out of a class of 45 students, only four had bothered to participate in today's class.

Yes, he was looking forward to his sabbatical, and the end of school year couldn't come quick enough.

Author Interview & Giveaway: Helena Newbury Insatiable Reads Blog Tour

About the Author:

I’m a New Adult Romance author who loves writing about what happens when love and dreams collide with the real world. I wrote my first novel, Dance for Me, in daily chunks in a very busy, very noisy coffee shop, which meant I had to order a black Americano every hour, on the hour, to keep my seat and wound up wired on caffeine most days. Unlike my characters, I can’t dance.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I plan—obsessively. I plan everything out scene by scene. Inevitably I change things when I write and then again when I edit and a third time after beta feedback, but I like to go in with a strong plan.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Yes. Clarissa and Neil, two of my secondary characters, in particular.

What is your favourite food?

Anything Mexican.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Morning. I like to get some writing done absolutely first thing, before breakfast if possible, and then stop to eat.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I’ve spent some time in New York, but not as much as I’d like. I love that city.

Do distant places feature in your books?

New York has only occasionally been home to me, so that’s distant, these days :)

Do you listen to music while writing?

No. I’d love to, but I find myself listening to it too much and the writing stalls. The exception is when I’m writing a dancing scene – then I go off and listen to the piece (fortunately I have a tame musician I can call on with music questions) until I can imagine the moves, and then I write it.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Dance For Me is about two people trapped by their pasts, but in very different ways. Natasha is consumed by guilt. She’s twenty-one and a dance student at Fenbrook Academy in New York: she has her whole life ahead of her, but she’s on a dangerous, self-destructive path. Darrell, meanwhile, appears the picture of success—a multi-millionaire designer with a huge mansion and a penchant for fast motorcycles. But his drive comes from anger, and that’s gradually destroying him. Close to burnout, he goes looking for inspiration and finds Natasha. Reluctantly agreeing to be his muse, she isn’t ready for the feelings that develop...or where they take her.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

I’ve been very lucky in that I know a few writers who’ve made it. Julia Kent, for example, is a friend who just made it into the Amazon top 100, which is awesome to see :) I’ve received all sorts of good advice from her and others. I’ve learned a lot more about cover design, about social media and about marketing since I first started, but I have plenty more to learn!

Is there anything you would do differently?

I think my main mistake, looking back, was being scared to show my stuff to anyone for a long time. Like a lot of writers, I’m not the most extrovert of people and find self marketing difficult. What really helps is finding a strong community of authors who all help each other and give honest feedback – and the indie community is just that. So: don’t do what I did. Show your stuff :)

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Outside NA, I think Douglas Coupland and Elizabeth Wurtzel. Within NA, Nadia Simonenko, Joya Ryan and Denise Grover Swank. It’s also been hugely useful to talk to real-world dancers and musicians about their experiences.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Write. Everything else indie authors do – networking, marketing, social media...it’s all important, but none of it is worth anything if you don’t finish your novel so you can move onto editing, beta etc. Don’t let the business of writing distract you from being a writer.

What are three words that describe you?

Methodical, romantic, idealistic.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

Right now, I’m loving Random Acts of Crazy by Julia Kent, but I’m biased because she’s a friend. It is a superb book, though – fun and breezy and perfect for summer.

Natasha is one of the most promising ballet dancers at the prestigious Fenbrook Academy of Performing Arts and she’s just landed a life-changing audition. But no one knows the guilt she carries...or the damage it makes her inflict on herself when she’s alone.

He starts to see the pain inside her and helps her gradually lower her defenses...but Darrell has demons of his own. Can two broken people save each other? Thank you for your interest.

Most is a plan, 3 or 4 chapters, often I feel my story going off on its own, within reason of course.

Then I plan the next 3 to 4.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Sometimes I will let them if it is logical.

You see, in a way it is their world and era that we are visiting.

We do not belong there.

They must stay there forever.

I'm joking, I hope I am not scaring you.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

I wanted an emotional Cyclone! Believable human beings! Not just characters.

The locations, war, slang, weather, weapons, gear, hopes and the uncertainty of the situation these soldiers are in.

Aachen was the first Third Reich city to fall under American Army siege.

The outcome was very serious for both sides!

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

FEAR! FRUSTRATION! DESPERATION!

Oh, and intense isolation, like being back in P.O.W. training.

Is there anything you would do differently?

I would have learned computers sooner.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

A lifetime of books and movies!

The whole good against evil thing and of course Jesus!

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Please do not disregard absolute fear of failure!

Look, I barely graduated, received no education benefits from honorable service in the Marines, (none of us did under carter).

I had no choice but to keep fighting, to keep learning anyway I could.

There could be no quitting, no surrender!

It was what I wanted!

It was my only chance in this world to succeed in my way.

Grateful to my new boss Allison, my agents Michael and Tamara;...Beyond what one could imagine!

Friends, please remember to learn to love fear and use it.

Do not let it hamper your creativity but indeed let it push you around if you start getting too lazy.

We only have just so much time.

What are three words that describe you?

Sensitive, tough, careful.

What's your favorite book or who is your favorite writer?

FUN! Where do I begin friend?

First thought; Lost Horizon by British World War 1 veteran James Hilton.

Author Interview: Gina Conkle

About the Author:

Gina’s a lover of history, books and romance, which makes the perfect recipe for historical romance writer. Her passion for castles and old places (the older and moldier the better!) means interesting family vacations. Good thing her husband and two sons share similar passions, except for romance…that’s where she gets the eye roll. When not visiting fascinating places, she can be found in southern California delving into the latest adventures of organic gardening and serving as chief taxi driver.

Pinterest: Gina Conkle http://bit.ly/180l9gv

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

A mix of both but heavy on the “flow” side.I tend to write down a scene that keeps playing in my head. If the characters persist with more, then I start a loose plot while at the same time researching their world. Then I do more in depth character profiles and background. After that, I go back to writing, but much is tweaked along the way.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Yes! And that’s the best when you let them tell the story and take over actions and emotions. It’s really more honest.

What is your favourite food?

I love Mexican food.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I’m a night owl married to a morning man. But, between motherhood and my husband, night owls must adapt.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I once visited Colmar, France and want to go back there again. I also want to tour the castles of southern France and southern England. Another place: Hadrian’s Wall (I want to hike the wall over a few weeks). I love older time periods. My motto is “The older and moldier, the better.” I see later Dark Ages history as not so dark and a real transition for mankind.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Yes. I like the predominant English settings and have some stories set there. However, Norse Jewel begins in the land of the Franks (France) and then mostly in Svea (Sweden).

Do you listen to music while writing?

Yes, I listen to LoreenaMcKennitt, some classical music, and some sound tracks like Game of Thrones.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Norse Jewel comes from years of my history nerdness. I visited Sweden in 1999 and read a lot of non-fiction about the Vikings. My favorite movie is “Gladiator.” Now think about the scene of Maximus telling the emperor that he wants to go home to his farm in Spain, but make that warrior leader a Viking chieftain, and you have the birth of Norse Jewel.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

It’s a lot of hard work…more than you can ever anticipate. It’s thrilling, but the big surprise is copyright infringement and how huge that is. My book was barely out and popping up on various piracy sites. I cried at how violating that felt.

Is there anything you would do differently?

I’d be more scheduled and disciplined. Someone posed the question to me a few years ago: Is your writing a profession or a hobby? I wish I would’ve been more directed.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

WriterUniv.com made the greatest impact on me. Laurie Schnebly-Campbell taught me so much. She’s not only published but she also works as a copywriter and teaches classes online and at conferences. I tease her that she’s my muse.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Decide what moves you to write. Ask yourself what deeper things are going on in your stories. Then take those answers and that’s the beginning of how you will reach readers. I know that’s pretty ephemeral, but that’s the basis for your website, your blogs, twitter, etc. And that’s what I’m coming around to next: start your website now. Don’t wait to be published. Get organized and reach out to people now.

What are three words that describe you?

Quiet, determined, easy-going

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

My favorite book is Josie Litton’s Dream of Me. She doesn’t write under that pseudonym anymore.

A stolen woman of rare qualities…

Helena, a captive woman, wants her freedom. The Frankish maid wasn’t born a slave but marauding Danes have taken her and she’s desperate to escape their camp. Her savior comes as a fierce Norse chieftain, Hakan, who takes her to the far, icy north.

A hard Norseman who’s lived by the sword…

Hakan wants to lay down his sword and live a peaceful farmer’s life. Betrayal left him cold to other women, yet his heart thaws to clever Helena. She lures him with kindness, weaving short-lived happiness in his life. The warrior’s vexed by deceit and old loyalties that call upon his sword arm.

A clash of cultures amidst a kingdom in transition…

War erupts…a kingdom’s in the balance. Can Hakan defend his homeland and save the woman he loves?
