Author Interview: Forever Together by Jade Whitfield

About the Author:

Author Jade Whitfield is a 22 year old mother of one. As the mother of a very active two year old, she finds that a good book helps her to relax after a day of running around.

In the past two years, she has broadened her scope of reading. She has always been an avid fantasy reader leaning towards the good old Catherine Cookson’s books. When she received a Kindle as a birthday present, she started reading all different kinds of books. In doing so she found a love for the romance books.

In school she was always good with English and Writing. So it came natural for her to write her first romance book titled ‘Forever Love’.

***

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I’m a terrible planner so that would be a terrible idea for me. With every book I spend about a day planning to plan and never actually do it. I find it much easier to just let the story flow and let the characters take you wherever they’re meant to go. No book tends to end the way you expect it to anyway. Though if there’s an important milestone to the story or a really great idea I do jot it down for later use.

What is your favourite food?

All food! As a child I was a really picky eater but as I’ve gotten older I just want to eat everything! I love pizza and Chinese the most though. And who doesn’t like McDonalds?!

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

A night owl absolutely. Most of my work is done at night and I find I do some of my best writing when its dark out. Plus, I hate mornings. I’m a person who loves their sleep.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I love cold places. I’m not a huge fan of the Summer or when its warm so anywhere warm would be a no no. I do love travelling even though I haven’t done much of it. I guess I love the idea of it and I really enjoy discovering and exploring new places.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Yes. I’m from the UK and my books take place near Savannah, Georgia. I had to do a ridiculous amount of research from the history of the state to actually studying a map of Savannah.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Forever Together is a second chance love story about Cindy and Brady, two supporting characters from my previous book, Forever Love. Its Contemporary romance meets Romantic Comedy meets New Adult. It’s very funny and in my opinion quite light hearted though there is some angst thrown in.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

So much. For one it’s a lot harder than I expected. It’s also hugely time consuming. If anything I think writing as become harder for me with every work because expectations are a lot higher and I set the bar higher with everything.

Is there anything you would do differently?

Probably not take things so personally. With my first book I’d have a meltdown over a one-star review. I was so proud and protective of it that I couldn’t imagine anyone not liking it. Now I realise that everyone has different tastes genres and that’s ok. When I first started with this I was so stressed and wound up, constantly on edge. Now I’m happy wherever I go and although I want people to enjoy what I write if they don’t that’s ok too.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Certain characteristics are certainly based on people I know or who I’ve seen. Trina from my books is based on Nene Leakes from Real Housewives of Atlanta. I always say Brady’s a mix of Steve Stiffler from American Pie and Joey Tribbiani from Friends.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Enjoy it. Stressing isn’t gonna do anything, worrying isn’t gonna help. If your enjoying what your writing, then there’s gonna be at least one other person in the world that will too.

What are three words that describe you?

I’d describe myself as funny, friendly and determined. My family and friends on the other hand would probably describe me as blunt, neurotic and over dramatic.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

I have so many favourite writers. To name a few it would have to be Jodi Ellen Malpas, Tamsyn Bester, Aurora Rose Reynolds and Jacy Oliver. My favourite book would have to be Sense and Sensibility because it’s the first romance I ever read and the first to make me cry.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Electromancer by Daco

Zeroing in on Electromancer

By D.S. AUFFENORDE
Exclusive to the Kensington City Examiner

Not long after I met with the mayor of Kensington City, Bobby Baumgartner (some consider him a statesman, others a snake-oil salesman—it’s not this reporter’ job to judge), I was accosted by a man hobbling down the street. The man’s gin-mill breath told me that he was clearly intoxicated. As I reached for my cellphone to call Kensington City’s Chief Constable, Pete Petaud (he and I had become acquainted in the course of my research for this story), the inebriated man began asking me to do a feature article on him. He said his name is Zachary Zero. Then he started ranting about sidewalks and flowers and how he’d wished he’d been sent to jail rather than becoming a gardener. When I suggested that he was a minor player in this saga of the superhero Electromancer, he took umbrage and replied that, to paraphrase, I’d want to hear what he had to say about that (and I quote) “flying, bat-crap-crazy dame Electromancer. “She’s beautiful, all right,” he said. “Hugely sexy, pun intended. So hot, she can knock a man’s socks off. She’ll knock a man’s block off, too, if he’s not careful!” Since I’m currently investigating Electromancer, I decided to ignore his sexist remarks and his drunken breath, and spoke with the man. But first, I did a quick search on my smart phone and discovered that Zachary Zero was at one time in charge of Kensington City’s treasury and funds—but no longer. [I will omit the alcoholic stammering and the slurring of words from the transcript.]
DA: Weren’t you recently fired from the position of comptroller for Kensington City?
ZZ: It was a bum rap. Extenuating circumstances.
DA: By whom?
ZZ: You ever meet the boss—uh, The Mayor?
DA: Are you implying that a man who might be a future prime minister of Britannia set you up?
ZZ: No, the boss … I mean The Mayor … he underappreciated me.
DA: Underappreciated?
ZZ: The Mayor, he’s got more gold than Midas. And here I am, a public servant, counting Kensington City’s beans … who wouldn’t take a little for himself? So when I became responsible for the city garden improvement fund … You gotta help me get those flower ladies off my back. Community service, hah! I’d rather be in jail, like I said. The ladies of the garden improvement society, they’ve made me their slave, I … But you want to hear about that Electromancer lady, though believe you me, she’s no lady. She was down at The Mick, you know the Manchester power plant here in town? What she did was shocking.
DA: How so?
ZZ: Just what I mean … shocking. She shocked my … some men who I never met before in my entire life. With her fingertips, that’s how. Saw it with my own eyes. She was naked, too.
DA: Mr. Zero, you’re telling me that you were at The Mick peeping at Electromancer?
ZZ: I plead the Fifth. We got that in Britannia too, you know, but we call it the Sixth. So I plead the Sixth.
DA: Are you saying you were down at The Mick when it exploded?
ZZ: Naw, naw, not me. Except Electromancer was. She might be the one behind all these attacks on the world’s energy sources.
DA: You said you saw Electromancer there.
ZZ: If you print it, I’ll deny it.
DA: What else do you have to say about Electromancer?
ZZ: She’s was there one second, gone the next. You think that’s how she flies?
[Mr. Zero again reached inside of his jacket, retrieved a flask, and drank from it. Then he held it up and opened his mouth but not a drop came out.] You wouldn’t have any juice on you, would you?
DA: Of course not.
ZZ: Jeez. What kind of writer are you? I thought all writers hit the juice.
At this point, Mr. Zero’s eyes rolled back into his head. He staggered backward slumped to the ground. Thankfully, at that moment, the Chief arrived with two of his officers and carted Mr. Zero back to the garden in the park.
Follow along as I continue my investigatory report on this mysterious Electromancer. In the meantime, you can also learn more about Electromancer, Blue Arrow, and others like Zachary Zero in the romantic, thrilling, superhero novel, Electromancer.

Excerpt:
Chapter One

Instead of the large, perfect fruit shown in the flyer, the Granny Smiths at Budget Foods were small and beaten up—yet another disappointing win for reality over promise. Eva Milaras gazed at the poor things as she tore off the coupon and stuffed the rest of the pages back into her bag. I guess we’re all bruised in one way or another.

Still, she was sure she could find half a dozen decent ones in the stack. She’d get some yams and put them together in a casserole—a tasty and inexpensive declaration that she was now back in charge of her life in spite of being broke.

She’d tough this out with what little cash she had in her purse until the gallery could figure out what was causing the mysterious delay in her payment. They owed her for two large paintings, and that money would be more than enough to get her back on her feet again. It was just a matter of time. She yanked a plastic bag from the dispenser and began picking through the apples.

She flashed on her little studio. It had great light, decent ventilation, and was within walking distance of most everything she needed. So what if she had to maneuver around her bed to get to the tiny kitchen? With Derek gone, it was all the room she needed for her easel and canvases. She’d love to keep it if she could, but the rent was due in two weeks and...well, she’d go to the gallery this afternoon, see what Leslie had to say. She found two more unbruised apples and took them as a sign of better times coming. She really would take charge of her life—simplify, concentrate on her work, and avoid complications like an unemployed boyfriend.

“Pardon, Serenissima.” A strong, warm voice from behind pulled her from her reverie.
Turning, she saw a man, early thirties probably, tall and well-built, dressed completely in black. Who wears such an expensive silk shirt and slacks to Budget Foods on a Saturday morning? They had to be club clothes, but he didn’t look like he’d been out partying all night. And what a great face to paint! A delicious olive tone to his skin, deep eyes, strong angular face-planes, so... compelling, framed by black hair that fell unbound, thick and dangerously sexy, past his shoulders. Great shoulders. Lean waist. Yes, he’d make a terrific model. She found herself smiling at him, realizing too late that it probably wasn’t a good idea. He was already standing uncomfortably close.

“Are you talking to me?” She backed away and tilted her head at the apples. “I’m afraid I’ve picked through these already. Good luck finding more decent ones.”

“Forgive my abruptness,” the man said, reaching toward her, “but you must leave this place with me immediately. You are in gravest danger. Please—we must leave this instant to avoid disaster.”

Suspicion chilled the spark of interest she’d felt. “Look, I came here just for apples.” She slid one hand into her purse, locating her pepper spray. “Leave me alone, please, or I’ll call store security.”

She hoped this guy didn’t know that Howard—the entire security staff of Budget Foods currently on duty— was in his seventies and would never be able to stand up to someone like this man, who carried himself with the smooth precision of a dancer or a martial artist. But at least Howard had a radio.

The man dipped his head and upper body in an odd, twisting bow. “Milady,” he said, his voice tight and urgent. “Please, I beg you. Your life is in real danger. You must trust me in this. I will explain later, but first we must flee.”

Flee? Eva looked around at the worn ordinariness of Budget Foods, with shoppers inching their carts along the aisles. There was nothing here to flee from except boredom.

Her finger found the directional notch on the tiny canister in her bag. “Look, I don’t know you, what you’re on, or what your deal is, but you’re scaring me.” She pulled out the spray and held it up. “This is nasty stuff, and I’ll use it on you if you don’t back off—right now.” She backed away from him again and bumped into the stacked apples. Several of them tumbled to the floor—even more bruises, she thought, as if they didn’t have enough already. She kept her eyes on the stranger, wincing as the apples thumped and rolled on the scarred wooden floor.

In a single fluid motion, the man flicked the can out of her hands and wrapped his arms around her, pushing her toward the floor, covering her with his body. Before she could scream for help, an explosion ripped the storefront window open, and she heard the screams of others.

In a strange, time-suspended clarity on the way to the floor, Eva could feel the muscles of his torso flex and twist, pushing hot against her in a symphony of coordinated physical power. How the heck did he know this was going to happen? Her back hit the floor, and her breath whooshed out in a grunt. She looked up into his face. His eyes stared into hers, fierce as a looming storm. Blue gray, she thought. No, slate. He was heavier than he looked, and she needed to breathe. But he had great eyes. “Get off me!” She pushed against him, and he rolled away without protest.

She sat up. Her ears hurt. The store—or what was left of it—was a mess. She could see two, no, three shoppers on the floor, not moving. In fact, nothing moved, and the stillness was horrible.

A soft groan floated through the smoke from somewhere. Still in its pink sweatshirt sleeve, an arm without an owner lay on the floor. And blood. Lots of it. This was so wrong. Oh, my god. She swallowed several times against a wave of nausea. What on earth had happened?

Then there was movement. All around her, shards of glass began to twitch and shift, becoming dark red scorpions scuttling toward them—dozens of them, different sizes, all the same. Glass shouldn’t do that, she was certain of it.

“Do not move, Serenissima,” the stranger commanded, his voice icy. He turned his back to her, putting himself between her and the scorpions. She stared at his back. He’d been hit by several pieces of glass—two of which stuck partway out of his flesh. All of those would have hit her if he hadn’t thrown himself over her. What the hell is going on?

His hands glowed, and pale fire flowed from his fingers in dancing streams—first carving a circle around them, then striking out at each scorpion. As his fire hit each one, the creature sparked into smoke and dropped, again becoming an inert piece of glass.

What did he just do? Eva looked around, trying to locate her pepper spray, but couldn’t see where it had rolled. She needed to get out of here. But her body was too heavy, felt too far away to respond.

“I don’t know how,” the man growled, “but your enemies have discovered who you are, milady. Now you will have no peace until you reach your Ceremony or they have destroyed us both, for I swear I will not outlive you.”

He stood, bending down. His hair tumbled forward, as if reaching to touch her. “I apologize, Highness, but I have no choice but to carry you to safety. With or without your permission.”

Why is he calling me these strange names? As he reached for her, Eva saw another shard of glass sticking out of his arm. Blood drenched his shirt down to the cuff. His hand dripped red, but he seemed oblivious of the injury. Still dazed, she felt him reach under her shoulders and knees and pick her up as if she weighed nothing.

He was kidnapping her. “Stop!” she screamed. “Put me down! Help!” She twisted against his iron-hard grip and grabbed a coconut from an end display as they passed. Eva pounded it against his chest and face, but he didn’t even look at her as he strode through the carnage to the rear of the store, kicked open the warehouse doors, and jumped off the loading dock to the ground.

On the other side of the alley sat a sleek limousine with darkened windows. As they approached, a passenger door swung open. The man deposited her inside, wrested the coconut from her, and tossed it away. He climbed in opposite her and pulled the door shut, wincing at the reach. The limo began to roll.

About the Author:

Lloyd A. Meeker credits Walter de la Mare’s “The Listeners” as the first poem to steal both his heart and his imagination. That was in seventh grade, and he’s never been the same since. At university he devoured Lord of the Rings in a single weekend. Then came Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea. Fantasy became his home turf.

He’s led what can only be described as an eventful life, and he’s grateful for all of it. He’s been a minister, a pilot, a janitor, a drinker, a cancer survivor, and a software developer on his way to becoming a writer. His work includes five novels, two books of poetry, a few essays, and several short stories.

He’s happily entangled in a life-long love affair with metaphor and the potent mystery of the Hero’s Journey, especially in its metaphysical and psychological aspects. He lives in southern Florida among friends and family with his husband, working on his next novel, practicing subtle energy healing, reading, wallowing in classical music and celebrating a very active retirement.

About the Author:

After teaching English literature in the UK, Japan and Malaysia, Helen Harper left behind the world of education following the worldwide success of her Blood Destiny series of books. Interview:

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I’m a total pantser - I write by the seat of my pants and just go where the story takes me! I think I’m always going to be a reader first so what I love about writing is not know what’s going to happen the next.  The characters usually tell me where the story is going to go next!

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I’ve always had itchy feet and I’ve spent the better part of the last twenty years travelling.  I lived in Thailand for a year when I was eighteen then, somewhat later in life, moved to Tokyo.  Now I’m in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where the weather is hot and life is good! With that said, however, I’ve always wanted to go to South America.  I know South East Asia very well but South America has always seemed exotic and with so many interesting and varied cultures.  I’ll get there one day!

Do distant places feature in your books?

I tend to base my books in the UK.  It’s so rich in terms of history and mythology that it’s just ripe for all kinds of urban fantasy stories.  As a Scottish lass, it’s also obviously a part of the world that I know well.  I love taking places that I’ve visited and then imagining wild and wonderful plots that could occur.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Nope.  I block out any sounds when I’m writing so music wouldn’t work for me!

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Gifted Thief is the first book in a new series set in Scotland - but a Scotland that’s very different to the one we know.  Rather than being joined to England in the eighteenth century, the entire Lowlands area was over-run by demons.  Now only the Highlands remain free although they’re run by a tight knit group of Scottish Clans. The main character is a young Sidhe woman called Integrity who, ironically enough, is a career thief! She should have been living a life of wealth and privilege but her father slaughtered her Clan when she was just a baby and she was dumped as an orphan on someone else’s doorstep.  All Sidhe are Gifted with magical abilities when they are thirteen years old but Integrity ran away before that could happen.  She’s perfectly happy to stay as far away from that world as possible … but circumstances conspire against her.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

So much! I started writing simply as a hobby to please myself.  I genuinely never intended to publish a thing and, when I did, never expected that anyone would ever read what I had to offer.  I feel like I’m living the dream and that every day I have to pinch myself.  It’s such a brave new world in terms of publishing nowadays, and it’s constantly changing and in a state of flux so it’s very important to pay attention to everything that’s going on.

I think after a few years of doing this, I have a very good grasp of what I can do myself and what I need to hire other people to do for me.  I don’t have any eye for covers so I’m very lucky in that I have a wonderful cover designer who’s able to put my ideas into reality.  Equally, despite having been an English teacher in a former life, it’s vitally important to still have a professional editor look at each book.  I’m always learning new things though.  Writing is a bit like life - you never know it all!

Is there anything you would do differently?

I have a strong group of fellow writers who I chat to online and I think that if I could go back, I would tried to find similar groups far earlier as the support you can get from others who are doing the same as you is absolutely invaluable.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Don’t think about the end result! Enjoy what you’re doing and write a book that you would want to read yourself.  If you’re not passionate about what you do, no-one else will be.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

First and foremost, I’m a reader so to pick out one book or one writer is next to impossible! I do often hark back to the authors I loved in my younger years - Julian May, Piers Antony, Raymond Feist and JRR
Tolkien.  I have eclectic tastes though.  Last year I read A Little Life by Hanya Yangihara and I was completely blown away.  It’s not for the faint-hearted but it’s a wonderful book and I’m recommending it to everyone I come across!

Orphan. Runaway. Thief.

Since the moment I was ripped from my mother's womb, I've been an outcast amongst my own kind. The Sidhe might possess magical Gifts, unbelievable wealth and unfathomable power but I don't want a thing to do with them. I ran away from their lands in the Highlands of Scotland when I was eleven years old and I've never looked back. I don't need a Clan. I've got my own family of highly skilled thieves who mean more to me than any Sidhe ever could.

Unfortunately for me, the playboy heir to the Moncrieffe Clan has something I desperately need. To get it back, I'm going to have to plunge myself back into that world, no matter what the consequences may be. I suppose it's just as well I have sense of humour. I think I'm going to need it.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Traveller by Abigail Drake

An American Yankee Writing About York
by Abigail Drake

When I had to choose the setting for my new book, Traveller, it came to me rather quickly. I visited York only twice, but I’ve been to Yorkshire several times. There was something about the whole area that captured my heart. The wind swept moors. Fluffy sheep wandering through sleepy, picturesque villages. Boats docked in Whitby harbor. The view from Roseberry Topping. Places named things like Hutton-le-Hole and Thornton-le-dale.

York itself is a treasure. An ancient walled city in which fashionable shops are juxtaposed with old pubs and a magnificent churches. If you haven’t seen York Minster, you need to go, and if you’ve never been to The Shambles, you’re missing out.

The Shambles became a main part of my story. It’s where my character, Emerson, meets her hero, Michael Nightingale for the first time, although things don’t exactly go according to plan.

When I visited England, I loved all the teashops so much that I knew I had to make them part of the story. For the teashop Emerson visited, I combined a few places I’d visited, including one lovely little shop on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. Not York, not even England, but it had the ambience I wanted. And the scones.

I decided the outside of the teashop would look at lot like Betty’s Café Tea in York. It was absolutely perfect.

Writing about a foreign country can be tricky, even if you’ve visited there many times. I can look at photos of York online, but no photo can tell me about what it was really like there. The sounds. The smells. The feel of the cobblestones under my feet. The fresh coolness of the air after a summer rain. The cavernous silence of the Minster. I’ve been lucky enough to see it all, and I try to put some of that into my writing.

Michael Nightingale, however, was not someone I encountered in real life. I learned about Irish Travellers on the BBC and was immediately fascinated by their culture. I knew nothing at all about it, and decided to start reading up on gypsy customs and the history of the Irish Travellers. My Travellers are not exactly typical, however. They are part of an ancient race of mercenary warriors that protects humans from monsters that roam the streets at night – not something covered on the BBC documentary – and they are not bad to look at, either.

I hope you enjoy Traveller, and I hope I did York justice in my book. There are few places in the world that have touched my heart so deeply. York is definitely someplace very special.

I think I shall make some scones, drink some Yorkshire tea, and plan another trip to England.

Happy Reading!

Excerpt:

“Who are you and what do you want from me?”

I took a deep breath. It probably wouldn’t be a good start to tell him he occupied my every waking thought and most of my dreams, too. I decided to go with a more conventional approach.

“You’re here every morning, and I thought I’d say hello.” I stuck out my hand. “Emerson Jane Shaw.”

He surprised me by reaching for my extended hand and holding it firmly. His hand, large, warm and rough, had cuts and bruises all over the knuckles. He had faint bruises on his face, too, and some small wounds still in the process of healing. He’d been in some kind of fight recently.

It didn’t surprise me. He had the look of a warrior about him, the lean strength and watchful eyes of a predator, and he was lethal. Sun Tzu would have seen it, too. He would have recruited him without a moment’s hesitation.

“Michael Nightingale.” He stared at me with those hypnotic eyes as he continued to hold my hand, using it to pull me nearer to him.

“I know. Mrs. Burke told me.” I couldn’t focus on what I was saying while he touched me, not that I’d done such a great job up until now with my witty repartee.

He tilted his head to one side, studying me the way a lion studies a gazelle before he eats it. His face was only inches away from mine.

“Do you like to flirt with danger, Emerson Jane Shaw?”

“Not usually, but today I can make an exception.”

The touch of his hand sent an electric current through my body that made my heart speed up and my brain slow down. He was intoxicating. I almost had to fan myself.

Abruptly, Michael let go of me and stood up, shoving his books into his backpack. I stood up, too.

“What’s wrong?”

Michael glared at me, threw some bills on the table and stomped out of the shop. Like an idiot, I grabbed my backpack and followed him.

He walked quickly through The Shambles, dodging pedestrians and umbrellas with ease. I wasn’t quite as lucky. The rain poured down, filling the street with puddles. Michael wore combat boots and jeans. I had on a useless pair of flats and no jacket. It only took seconds for me to be soaked to the skin and miserable. In minutes, I looked like a little blonde drowned rat.

I’m pretty fast, even in slippery shoes, and I was motivated. I kept him in my sights until he reached a side street at the end of The Shambles that led down a narrow lane. I was only half a block away when he turned and looked at me, his eyes locking with mine, and disappeared.

He hadn’t walked away. He hadn’t moved. He’d been there one second, and gone the next. Running as fast as I could, I reached the spot where I’d last seen him and looked down the lane and on either side of the street. My ribbon flew out of my hair, blowing away in the wind as I slid on the wet cobblestones and nearly fell. I skidded to a halt, realizing I hadn’t been fast enough. It was a dead end, and he was gone.

WAS I on my way to death? The possibility made my heart race. Breathing deeply to calm myself, I caught a heavy dose of truck exhaust as it wafted into the box-car, mixing with the man-stink of a dozen filthy soldiers. The pitching movement of the train mocked the upheaval in my stomach—at every station the train jerked to a stop then lurched forward at departure, churning my insides at every jolt.

What the hell was I doing here? Yes, I believed in hell be-cause I believed in God, which a good communist wasn’t sup-posed to do, and I did my best to be a bad one. Living in the U.S.S.R. was excruciating, as if Soviet Socialism was a dull knife stabbed into my guts since childhood, always twisting and dig-ging deeper. In this boxcar, I felt like a caged rebel—yet I was too proud to permit anyone to know the extent of my disgust and despair.

As I stewed over my circumstances, I twirled a clump of my wavy hair over the index finger of my left hand. To distract my-self from the rim of the barrel cutting into the back of my legs, I shifted my attention to the only other woman in the boxcar full of Red Army soldiers, an early-graying woman of thirty-five or so, who stood at the other end of the car, biting her nails. What was her story? Was she going someplace scary? Suddenly, a hard turn made me bash my head on the wall. Once I succeeded in stifling a grimace and righting myself on the barrel again, I gripped my satchel tighter, mindful that each day I clutched at a fistful of life. Now, as the train charged onward, I felt my grasp weakening; the little control I possessed over my life was pour-ing through the gaps in my fingers.

After another hour, the train labored to a stop at a station. When several rowdy Russian soldiers climbed into the boxcar, the floorboards creaked with the extra weight. With the addition of more strangers, I longed to be back home with my family—what was left of them—sitting around the kitchen table with a cup of sugary tea, listening to a story from my papa, and laugh-ing with my mama. But those people and that possibility became more remote with each frigid, snow-covered verst. Every day would be a fight; if I was to get back to them, I needed to survive in this new unknown.

The boisterous soldiers jostled each other like schoolboys, until one by one they fell silent as they noted the grim silence of the haggard veterans. When the soldier next to me said, “Not one step back,” I thought he meant to mock Stalin’s grand order, but then I understood the soldier merely cautioned a boarding rider not to back into the corner where the urine bucket sat. The newcomer wore a uniform—new, with the creases still denting the stiff, manure-colored pants. The young soldier nodded at the warning then like many others, stared out at the open land through the gap in the wall, a crude window with bars that kept the box car cold and lessened the odor of urine and grimy men. After a couple of moments, I realized I knew that voice. I quick-ly studied his face. He paused then returned my gaze.

“It is very cold,” he said.

“Yes, it is,” I said.

The soldier nodded then we looked away from each other. Angered by my lack of diligent observation, my face flushed hot. Clearly, I should have recognized him earlier and kept my dis-tance. Wondering what his name was, I felt sad that I only knew him as “19,” his black market code number. By necessity, our dealings had been simply business in nature, without a word of pleasantry beyond a stiff greeting. My last sight of him took place at one of my clandestine Bible studies, four or five months ago. Though no one knew who had arranged it, 19 arrived at the supposedly secret meeting with a box full of Bibles. The sum of four of the purchases became my commission. Although we would never speak or acknowledge each other again, I hoped he had a family that cared for him and wished him well. Venturing a glance over at his hands, which were chapped and creased with dirt, I realized I had only seen him in the darkness or by distant lamplight. Now that I had seen him clearly, I concluded his fami-ly honored the Shabbat, lit the menorah, and had observed the mourning period of shiva more than once.

Later that morning, the train jolted the passengers as it began to brake for the station. Soon after the train lurched to a stop, my guts cart wheeled when someone unlocked the doors from the outside. Why the hell did those communist bastards lock us in? I had been caged. But I needed to keep my wits. If I ever stopped thinking, I’d be lost—that’s when they take over. Then I’ll be a sheep like the rest of these louts.

Guest Post

When people ask me if I have a hobby, I usually tell them "cooking."  This is partially because "I write pornographic urban fantasy novels" isn't always an appropriate reply.  Of course, telling people that I like to cook is a bit disingenuous.  What I really mean is that I love to eat.  It turns out that enjoying your food almost always involves cooking it yourself.  (Okay, maybe if you're very wealthy, you can eat out at amazing restaurants, have a private chef, and a personal trainer and skip the whole cooking part of the equation.)  Certainly, I wasn't taught much beyond basic cooking skills growing up and the work I've done expanding my repertoire has almost entirely been driven by the demands of my mouth.
Cooking, like many things worth doing, takes a great deal of time and energy.  And I'm not just talking about how long a meal takes to prepare.  After so many years, I have a number of recipes that are actually quite quick and easy.  But it takes time to learn how to read a recipe and assess whether a) you have or can develop the skills, b) whether you have the right tools, and c) how long it's really going to take.  The "estimates" in recipes for the time a meal takes to prepare are notoriously bad.  There were many evenings where I spent way more time than I intended making a meal that could only be described as "meh."  The same goes for figuring out what kitchen tools you need and which ones just take up a stupid amount of space in your cabinets.
Without question, the cuisine I am most comfortable cooking is Indian. Of course, saying that I know how to cook Indian food is sort of like saying I know how to cook American food.  India is a huge country with extensive regional differences in the cuisines.  That said, I make no claim to authenticity.  Instead, I have collected cookbooks (and discarded a few along the way) that let me create food I love to eat.  This particular love is shared by my husband—cooking, eating, and Indian food—and was the reason he and I went to India on our honeymoon.  In fact, most of our vacation planning starts with one of us asking the other, "what do you want to eat?"
