Author Interview and giveaway: Nancy Madore

About the Author:

Nancy Madore achieved enormous critical acclaim with her ENCHANTED series, which includes ENCHANTED, ENCHANTED AGAIN and ENCHANTED DREAMS.

Now, following her life-long interest in history and mythology, Nancy Madore is launching a new series in the historical and science fiction genres, called LEGACY OF THE WATCHERS. Vol. 1, released in November 2012, is entitled THE HIDDEN ONES.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I have to plan ahead, otherwise I would constantly be going back and making changes. My latest project is a six book series and I actually knew what would happen in the sixth book before I would allow myself to start writing.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Yes, and I usually let them. I’ll even make changes in the plot if they’re insistent enough.

What is your favourite food?

Chocolate. That’s a food, right?

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Both. I’m a workaholic, which means I wake up early, thinking about what I have to do, and then at night I have trouble getting to sleep…again, thinking about what I have to do.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I would love to visit the Middle East someday. I’m fascinated with that part of the world. Partly because of its history. I’m a big history buff and the ancient East is my favorite study topic.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Yes, distant places and distant times. Throughout the series I go back in time to Ancient Mesopotamia, Persia and even Greece.

Do you listen to music while writing?

No. I can’t have any sound. It distracts me. I think I must have that attention deficit disorder because I can’t concentrate on two things at once (or maybe I’m just getting old).

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

The Hidden Ones is the first book in my new series, Legacy of the Watchers. It’s about three women whose lives become entangled in a mystery that involves ancient civilizations throughout the Middle East, and their claims that ‘angels’ visited the earth. That began a chain of events that suddenly threatens our existence today. Though this series is part science fiction and part paranormal, it is also historically accurate. People tell me this is impossible. I guess we’ll have to see what they say after they read it.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

I have been writing for about eight years. I already have four books out in another genre. I began writing erotic romance for Harlequin, and then moved on to the historical – science fiction genre because, frankly, I find it more interesting and challenging. I have learned that writing is very difficult and changing genres is even harder.

Is there anything you would do differently?

No. I don’t know. Maybe. I don’t think about the past. I do try to learn from it, but I don’t like to dwell on it. I probably think too much about the future, in fact, so I guess I would try to live more in the present.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Although I’m not religious (I am spiritual), I grew up in a very rigidly religious environment. I’ve read the Bible three times in my life so far. I contribute this religious background to my obsession to figure out…what really happened back then? That’s what I find myself wanting most to write about.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Write every single day. Don’t think about the whole project…just focus on your goals for the day.

What are three words that describe you?

Hardworking, intense, kind.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

That’s hard for me to answer. It really depends on my mood. At the moment, Richard Russo.

LEGACY OF THE WATCHERS (the series)

Thousands of years ago something came out of the sky that changed the course of human history. Testimonies abound of these ‘angels’ and their hybrid offspring, the ‘Nephilim’ giants. These mighty ‘gods’ quickly rose to power, and the ancient world came alive with industry and culture. People who lived for hundreds of thousands of years as hunters and gatherers suddenly began settling in one place, cultivating the land and even governing themselves. They invented irrigation, the wheel and algebra. Yet amidst all this progress, an undercurrent of terror was spreading like wildfire, carrying whispers of ‘djinn,’ ‘daeva’ and ‘demons.’

The Watchers were supposed to do just that: watch. But humankind proved far too tempting and they ‘fell’ to earth, taking wives and even producing children. But their children grew into unruly giants whose souls didn’t ascend like human souls when they die, but remained here on earth. These errant souls haunt the earth to this day. They are the ‘djinn,’ the ‘hidden ones,’ also known as ‘daeva’ and ‘demon.’ They have one purpose—to live. But to live they need bodies.

This chain of events has now reached the point where the djinn need more than just our bodies to survive. They must take back control of the earth, just as in the days when they ruled as gods.

The Hidden Ones (book one)

As CEO of her own thriving company, Nadia Adeire is flush with success, but a secret society dating back to the Essenes believes her to be one of the ancient djinn—the notorious demoness of Hebrew legend, Lilith. What’s more, they have reason to believe that she’s plotting a catastrophic attack on the world.

Nadia is snatched from her ‘perfect’ life and caught in a maze between a present day disaster and the ancient legends of the djinn. The only way out is to retrace the steps of her deceased grandmother, Helene. The deeper Nadia delves into the past, the harder it will be for her to emerge unscathed. But it’s the only way to stop this impending disaster that was set in motion five thousand years ago!

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

Though THE HIDDEN ONES is a work of fiction, the historical content within the book is accurate. It is especially interesting to note how what happened so long ago in Mesopotamia still affects us today. Our religions, our wars, even our worst fears are irrevocably tied to that period in history. Perhaps the past hold keys to the present, buried among the many artifacts and writings like hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered.
