Author Interview: Katie Gatto

About the Author:

Katie Gatto is a self-published author who hopes to bring the joy of fantasy stories she first experienced as a child to her own readers. She holds a BA in English Literature, a M.S. in Information Systems and currently teaches at Monmouth University.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

Generally I try to let the characters tell me what they are going to do next. Planning comes later on, when I have to merge it all into a final draft, but that is really to make sure there are no gaps.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Well, the certainly surprise me from time to time. As for taking over the story.... well, I do have a few ambitious people in this book. They might be plotting it as we speak.

What is your favourite food?

Baked Ziti

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Night Owl

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

Japan. The history, the culture, the sense of tradition, the beautiful temples.

Do distant places feature in your books?

No, just made up ones.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Yes, I have several Pandora stations I use. My favorite plays a mix of acapella groups.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

The Alchemist's Memory is a classic style YA fantasy tale for the young adult reader written by Katie Gatto. It traces the story of a young, but surprisingly powerful, woman whose decisions will impact the fate of her kingdom. It's coming out as an ebook, on Feb 1st 2013, through Smashwords.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

When something is wrong with your writing you will know. Don't let anyone tell you differently. Also, don't rush it.

Is there anything you would do differently?

Yes, many things, but I'm not sure I want to talk about that in public...oh, you mean in my writing. I would have learned graphic design to make better covers for myself.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Well, I consumed an amazing amount of books as a kid. Authors like Wreede and Tolkien were staples when I was little and I would say they put a love of Fantasy in me that I never quite got rid of. Other than the people in my life provide an amazing amount of fodder.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Write as much as you can. Stop for nothing and get your thoughts out on paper when they are fresh. If you never publish that story that's OK. The writing itself will prepare you for greater writing.

What are three words that describe you?

Fun, adaptable and voracious

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

That would be like asking a parent to choose between children.

Blurb of your latest release or coming soon book
