Author Interview: Joy Elbel

About the Author:

Joy Elbel lives in Central Pennsylvania which is also the setting for her first novel. "Shades of Summer" is the first installment of the four part The Haunting Ruby Series. A serious fascination with ghosts and a love of reading led her to want to create her own works of fiction. She admits to spending way too much time on Facebook and not enough time doing everything else. She will be releasing the final book in the series, "Spirits of Spring", in August 2013. She is currently working on a second series of young adult novels.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

In general, I don't do much planning. I have a basic idea of where I'm going plot-wise but letting it all come out naturally works much better for me.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Often. And when they do, I let them. It's their story and sometimes I just need to shut up and do what they tell me to do.

What is your favourite food?

Honestly, pretty much anything that I don't have to cook myself.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Hoot, hoot! Mornings...suck.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

New Orleans because it is such a mysterious city.

Do distant places feature in your books?

No...they are all set in the same small Pennsylvania town. Kind of like me... :(

Do you listen to music while writing?

While writing, no. It's too distracting. I do listen to AFI and Blaqk Audio for inspiration though.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

I recently released the third book in the series, Wraiths of Winter. It follows Ruby through her darkest hours yet. She has a lot of decisions to make...ones that will follow her for the rest of her life if she chooses the wrong path.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

I have learned how to add depth to my writing. The publishing process gets easier with each release...really it does!

Is there anything you would do differently?

I would have liked to have released each book in the series during the corresponding season but it's too late to do that now!

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

I think everything you do and everyone you meet influence your writing in some way. It's inevitable.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

No matter how many times you read your own work, there will always be something you want to change. You have to find a place where you just say to yourself, "Enough is enough."

What are three words that describe you?

mysterious, moody, and mischievious

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

The Harry Potter Series

Blurb of your latest book:

Wraiths of Winter, The Haunting Ruby Series Book Three

Love creates confusion...but which path leads to happiness?

Just when Ruby thought her life was back on track, Fate came along and derailed it. With her heart suddenly torn between two boys, the last thing in the world she needs is another ghost. But when Rachel discovers that Ruby can communicate with the dead, she begs for her help. Crimson has been missing since the Halloween masquerade party and is quite possibly in the clutches of a sadistic killer.

Similarities to the unsolved murder of Drake Sterling's girlfriend five years earlier make him the prime suspect. Rachel believes that Drake is innocent and that a conversation with the dead girl, Allison Cornell, will not only prove that he is, but also lead them to Crimson. Ruby reluctantly agrees to help, thinking that it will be a safe and easy task. She couldn't be more wrong. The search for Allison's ghost leads Ruby to the Bantam Theater and her most dangerous adventure yet.

Despite Rita's warnings to stay away from the theater, Ruby continues to search for the truth. Ghosts aren't the only things to fear in Charlotte's Grove, though. Strange events lead Ruby to believe that she is next on the killer's to-do list. While two boys fight to protect her and win her heart, she knows that in the end she will have to break one of theirs. But which one? The choice isn't an easy one. Ruby must make difficult decisions that will affect her future while confronting the Wraiths of Winter
