Author Interview: The Lucy Trilogy by L.M. Pruitt

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

--I do a little of both. I have a beginning and end in mind and certain plot points which need to be met but I tend to let things develop as they will.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?
--Sometimes, which is why I don’t plot out absolutely everything. It gives me the freedom to let the characters and myself explore some.

What is your favourite food?
--This is definitely a tie between fried chicken and green beans. And ice cream.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
--I’m more productive in the morning but I definitely don’t like waking up early. I prefer to be up at night but I’m also willing to admit I’m lazier then.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?
--Oh, so many places. I’m planning on traveling to Paris next March because I’ve always wanted to go to Europe and I feel Paris is one of those places that needs to be experienced. I also want to tour Ireland and visit England because that’s where the majority of my ancestors came from.

Do distant places feature in your books?

--Yes and no. In the overall series, there are a lot of different cities mentioned, all over the globe. In this particular part of the series, this trilogy, there are some places, but not as many as in the original series.

Do you listen to music while writing?
--Sometimes, yes. If I write at home and I’m trying to meet a specific word count in a set amount of time or just really focus, I’ll turn on Pandora. If I’m out at a coffee shop or a bar, I’m content with background noise.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?
--This is the third set of books in the Winged world and more than likely the last ones. It doesn’t mean I won’t return to these characters or this world in general but this specific section of it, I think, has had its story told. As to what it’s about, it’s really about overcoming your past, discovering who you are and what’s important to you—and the Ten Plagues.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?
--So much it’s absolutely impossible to encapsulate it. I will say it’s as rewarding as it is frustrating.

Is there anything you would do differently?
--I don’t think so, no. There are some people I no longer trust but I look at everything as a life lesson. I may or may not have had the success I did today if I hadn’t made the same decisions earlier. Since for the most part I like where I am, I wouldn’t change anything.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?
--I think life in general influences as—the changing social climate, personal experiences, and so on. As far as writers, Nora Roberts, Seanan McGuire, and Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?
--Read everything, and I do mean everything. Reading in your genre is important but reading outside your genre exposes you to new techniques and new ideas which might not show up in your normal reading materials.

What are three words that describe you?
--Sarcastic, determined, intelligent (and now that sounds vain but I stand by it)

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?
--There is no way to answer that question. I have so many of both it would take forever to even narrow the list.
