Author Interview & Book Spotlight: Landon Porter

About the Author:

Landon Porter is a tutor and computer repairman by day, a geek by night, and a writer at all points in between. He lives in Virginia atop a pile of RPG sourcebooks, comics, and speculative fiction novels.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I usually have the beginning, middle, end and a few big setpieces in mind, but everything else is seat-of-my-pants.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

All the time! Not only that, but some of them try to hide from plot too. Sometimes it feels more like corralling characters than structuring plot.

What is your favourite food?

I am an addict for the steak egg and cheese bagels from McDonalds.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I'm such a night owl that if left to my own devices, 6am is bed time.

I work much, much better in the wee hours.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

Like any good geek, my first answer is Tokyo because it's where my favorite pop culture comes from. Giving it a bit more thought, I can't pin-point a single place. I'd like to rock the world tour to see which one I'd like first hand.

Do distant places feature in your books?

I deal mostly in spec-fic, so technically yes. Distant times too. To be more serious, I'm recently been working on sending the characters in my superhero series to new locales that are future versions of real places.

Do you listen to music while writing?

I couldn't write without it. I'm also partial to weird combinations: Judas Priest and Disturbed segue into Disney themes and mambo.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

My latest release is 'The Path of Destruction' the third in my Rune Breaker series.

The first book introduced us to the mains: Taylin a former slave who wants to find a life where she's happy and comfortable, and Ru, an evil, immortal wizard who accidentally becomes bound to serve her by magic. The second gives them a supporting cast and features the first direct attack from the antagonist of the series.

Now with the third, we get to have the group bond some, plus they have a pretty amazing fight with a demon and a lot of the mysteries from
the first two books come out. I really think a lot of fantasy readers
will find the kind of things going on here to be something new and
fun.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

No matter how much you love and craft your story, somehow your fans will know more than you about it. It's really kind of amazing watching a fandom digest a work and process it out into their discussions.

Is there anything you would do differently?

Ha, I definitely would have done a bit more than zero research before publishing the first time. I also would have started publishing my web-serial much, much sooner. I'm still playing catch-up.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Everyone and everything I come into contact with has some influence. I will grab inspiration from things as dumb as random word generators and mishearing things on television.

If I had to pick one big influence, it would be my love of big, dumb movies. Not the bad plots, but their ability to completely sell audiences through spectacle. I tend to blend spectacle into my storytelling style to pull people in.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Never throw an idea away because you find out that it's 'kind of like' something else. Nothing is completely original and the it is the execution, not the very core idea that's important. Along that same vein, don't discard ideas just because you can make them sound stupid out of context.

What are three words that describe you?

Inquisitive, Passionate, Barnumesque*
*Being or having qualities akin to famous showman and huskster PT Barnum

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

My favorite book at the moment is The Lies of Locke Lamorra and my favorite writer is Brandon Sanderson.

The Path of Destruction (Rune Breaker, #3)

After a lifetime of slavery and war, Taylin thought she'd found the life she wanted. She had a family, friends and a purpose. If not for the tiny issue of having the ancient dark wizard, Ru Brakar, mystically bonded to her, her stay in Daire City would have been paradise.

But the manipulative demon, Immurai the Masked, has other plans. He sacked Daire City, attacked those she loved, and kidnapped her adoptive nephew. His demand: that she bring him something called a Soul Battery to his distant stronghold.

Backed by her adoptive sister Raiteria, her friends Kaiel and Brin, and the ever-present and reticent Ru, Taylin strikes out, following an army seeking vengeance for a slain king. Their mission: discover the nature of the Soul Battery and take the stolen child back.

The price: blood, toil and secrets laid bare, some of which they didn't even know they carried.

Runebreaker

by Landon Porter
Fantasy

Blurb:

There is a legend in the world that tells of a weapon sought after by only the most wicked of souls. Passed down through the years since before the coming of the gods, it grants its master the power to conquer and rule. The Rune Breaker.

After decades of dormancy, it just found a new master in Taylin, an escaped slave, who stumbled upon its resting place and found it bound to her will. But as it happens, the Rune Breaker is really a person: the shapeshifting master and dark mage, Ru Brakar, who has been cursed to serve whoever finds him since prehistory.

Taylin refuses to keep a slave, but an accidental order to Ru lands them both flung far into the future, where they must rely on one another and their new allies to brave a world alien to both of them and the attentions of a foe who stalks them in hopes of gaining access to a power beyond the gods.

Excerpt:

He straightened up, floating off the ground again until his head was of a height with hers. His eyes were still downcast. “I am the shape-shifting master. The arcane terror of nations long dead. The weapon bound by the most complex spell structures ever devised in the history of two worlds to serve the strongest of souls.

“I am kingmaker. Beast slayer. The foundation of tyranny. The destroyer of armies and the power of ancestral gods. Use me as you will and I will rain oblivion on your enemies. Work your will through me and all barriers before you will be utterly decimated. Direct me in the service of your greatest desires and you will rule nations.”

Without warning, he dropped to a knee, supported by one fist on the smooth, stone floor. “My name is Ru Brakar. And until you breathe your last, I am your servant and weapon. Such was the bargain you struck and sealed in blood.”
