Author Interview: Thirst by RP Channing
Author Bio
R P Channing started writing three years ago, but never published anything even after churning out over a million words of fiction. Thirst: Blood of my Blood is the first book he dared to publish. When asked why, he said, “Because it’s the first thing I wrote that my wife actually enjoyed reading.” When not hammering away (most literally) at his keyboard, he can be found buried in a book, reading anything from romance to horror to young adult to non-fiction to comedy.
Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?
I do a bit of both, although I tend to let the story flow more often than not. I've tried outlining, plotting beforehand. It always fails.
Do your characters ever want to take over the story?
All the time! I start writing and then they develop minds of their own. There's no controlling them.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Night owl by far. Sometimes I'll fall into an "early-to-bed" rhythm, but it never lasts.
Do you listen to music while writing?
No. I did once but I found it distracts from the mood of the story. An author is trying to create a mood, and if you're feeling something from the music then that mood is not coming from your book.
Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?
Thirst is a YA novel about ghosts, demons, vampires and witches. It's a paranormal romance with a touch of scary in it. At its core, it's a romance, and the depth of the love between the two main characters took a lot of work to put together.
Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?
I take something out of every book I read. And I always try and look for what's good in a book rather than poke at what's bad. That's the only way to truly learn something. There are a million ways to do something wrong, and only one way to do it right. So you need to focus on what's right when reading books from other authors so you can do it yourself in your own stories.
What are three words that describe you?
Obstinate. Bullheaded. Tenacious. (Oh, wait, those are synonyms. Oh well...)

YA Paranormal Romance/Dark Fantasy/Demons/Witches/Vampires
~ Kira Sutherland ~
After a near fatal accident (and getting cheated on by her 'boyfriend'), and beating up the lead cheerleader (with whom the boyfriend cheated...), and being labeled as having 'issues' in her school because she, uhm, sees ghosts, Kira is left with two choices:
1. Continue her 'therapy' (where she's told the ghost is a hallucination and also gets her legs ogled too often...)
Or
2. Go to Starkfield Academy, a boarding school for "Crazies and Convicts" (as the social media sites call them.)
She chooses the latter...
~ Cory Rand ~
Cory Rand has not had an easy life. His mother died in a car accident when he was twelve, and so did his mother's best friend...sort of. You see, Janice made a promise to take care of Cory just before she died, and so she lingers. Undead. A ghost that watches out for him.
Brought up in an abusive home, Cory quickly falls into a life of disreputable behavior. After his third offense (which was prompted by a girl, as usual - he has a weakness) he's left with two choices:
1. Be tried as an adult and share a cell with a guy named Bubba (he thinks...)
Or
2. Go to Starkfield Academy, which Cory is pretty sure is run by vampires. But, hey, at least he'll get an education.
He chooses the latter...
It's at Starkfield that Kira meets Cory Rand, a boy with an insatiable Rage who sees ghosts, too. As well as other things, other things from his past, things that confuse him, things like fire and witches and demons.
Things he's always ignored.
Until now.

Author Interview: Christopher Mannino
About the Author:
Christopher Mannino’s life is best described as an unending creative outlet. He teaches high school theatre in Greenbelt, Maryland. In addition to his daily drama classes, he runs several after-school performance and production drama groups. He spends his summers writing and singing. Mannino holds a Master of Arts in Theatre Education from Catholic University, and has studied mythology and literature both in America and at Oxford University. His work with young people helped inspire him to write young adult fantasy, although it was his love of reading that truly brought his writing to life.
Christopher is the author of The Scythe Wielder’s Secret, a thrilling young adult fantasy/adventure series. The first two books in the trilogy, School of Deaths and Sword of Deaths, are out now, with the third book Daughter of Deaths expected to be released next year.
Reviewers have compared The Scythe Wielder’s Secret to Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Percy Jackson. It is recommended for readers who enjoy magical realism, fantasy, paranormal, middle grade, young adult, and/or books with a strong female protagonist.
To learn more, go to http://www.christophermannino.com/
Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?
When I write, my process begins with a scenario. A scenario is sort of like the back cover of a novel, the blurb you read when deciding whether to buy a book. A scenario has a general set-up, maybe some of the characters but little more.
After developing a scenario, I create what I call an “image outline.” I envision a number of specific visual images. I can see very detailed pictures in my mind, and sometimes even sketch them out on paper. I don’t know where in the story these images will occur, or how they will connect, but I know they’re an integral part of the story. For example, with School of Deaths, I pictured an enormous iron door in the middle of an upward-flowing waterfall. This image became a central location in the series, although at first I didn’t know what it was at all.
Following the scenario and the image outline, I do largely let the story flow at its own pace. With Daughter of Deaths, the final novel in the trilogy, I did have to outline a bit more, to make sure all elements wrapped up in a cohesive way, but even in that novel the story mostly evolved from start to end while I wrote.
What is your favourite food?
Chocolate! Also love pumpkin spice everything.
Where do you dream of travelling to and why?
Everywhere! I absolutely love to travel, and wish I could do it more often. Asia and South America are high on my list, especially Machu Picchu and India. Last year my wife and I celebrated our honeymoon in Hawaii and the natural features of the islands truly inspired me. The original series was largely inspired by my studies in Oxford and a trip to Cornwall, so travelling as a form of inspiration is a huge part of how I write.
Do distant places feature in your books?
The Scythe Wielder’s Secret was inspired by a trip I took to Tintagel, Cornwall. I then worked on the initial novel while I was studying at Oxford. In the first novel, most of the locations visited are fantasy places. However, in books two and three, I returned to the United Kingdom with my characters. There is a large section in the final novel that takes place in Oxford itself, and a scene in book two that takes place in Tintagel. Other scenes include brief visits to China and Rome in the books, but the largest focus does remain the many diverse locations in the imaginative World of Deaths.
Do you listen to music while writing?
Yes- I created a Pandora station just for writing, it helps me focus. The music I listen to is mostly from soundtracks, and is mixed with modern classical artists like Lindsey Stirling, Enya, and Karl Jenkins.
Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?
Sword of Deaths, the second novel in The Scythe Wielder’s Secret was released in ebook in August, and will be released in paperback in January. The sequel expands on the World of Deaths, going far deeper into the characters and backstory of the world. In the second book, I used three points of view, rotating between three of the lead characters. The three characters experience many unexpected twists and turns as the stage is set for an epic conclusion to the trilogy in the final novel.
What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?
Writing the novel is the easy part. Every progressive step only gets harder. The editing process is tricky, but then there’s finding a publisher and going through their processes. After that you’ve only just started, while you try to navigate the world of marketing. With more books than ever before published every day, and fewer people reading regularly, it’s never been trickier to find success in the publishing industry. Ingenuity and perseverance do make a major difference.
Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?
Never give up. It’s easy to get frustrated with writing, publishing, and marketing, but those who succeed are the ones who keep trying and never give up.
What are three words that describe you?
Creative,
Persistent,
Energetic
What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?
Oh wow, too many books and writers to list. Tolkien was my favorite writer for a long time. I grew up loving the mythology of Middle Earth, and later studied mythology in college. The Mabinogi, a collection of Welsh myths, remains one of my favorite myth cycles. I did get swept up in the Potter books when they came out. Other favorite novels include Pillars of the Earth, Good Omens, and American Gods.

Author: Gary Green
Genre: YA Fantasy
Rebecca’s Initiation is a fast paced fantasy adventure about a young girl who loses her mother in a car accident and has to go live with her grandmother. Her grandmother, Naomi, is an extraordinary woman who lets Rebecca in on her secret and initiates her into a world of magic populated with fairies, gnomes, elves and a dragon.

An ancient god has marked her for death and without the help of her new magical friends she is doomed. She has to learn how to defend herself—and learn fast. Rebecca’s Initiation will keep you guessing from beginning to end.
Excerpt:
“One day Dad and I were out in the cow pasture bringing the cows in to be milked. There was a cow grazing by the edge of the woods. I went over to get her when a wolf jumped out of the bushes. He was growling and foaming at the mouth and was clearly stalking me. I screamed and froze. He was still about fifty feet away, but I knew I couldn’t outrun him. We knew there were wolves in the woods but mostly they left us alone. This one clearly had rabies.
Dad shouted, ‘Hold still, I’m coming.’
I could see he had picked up a stick and was running toward me. Then it happened. There was an ear-splitting roar. I looked up to see Cedric diving from the sky. He landed between me and the wolf. He roared again and picked up the wolf with his mouth. He crunched him with his teeth and swallowed him whole. Then he turned around and winked at me.
‘Get away from that thing,’ my dad shouted. He was panting when he got to me. He grabbed me and started pulling me away from Cedric. He brandished that stick and shouted to Cedric, ‘Keep away.’
Really, I don’t know what he thought he was going to do with that stick, but he was protecting his daughter. I started to protest. I tried to tell him Cedric wasn’t dangerous, that he was my friend. He wasn’t hearing me.
Cedric looked at us with a cold expression in his red eyes and flew away.
The next day there was a gathering at the church. Cedric had been seen, not only by my dad but some of our neighbors.
‘That thing is a menace. It could have swallowed us whole just like it swallowed that wolf.’ Dad told the crowd.
‘What was it?’
‘I say it was the Devil.’
‘Devil or not, something that big has to have a big appetite. It will soon be eating our livestock or even our children.’
I tried to protest, but no one listened to me. They were scared and often fear can quickly turn to violence. Soon they developed a plan to hunt Cedric and kill him. I was heartsick. I had to warn him.
Later that day I was told to stay in the house while they hunted my friend, but as soon as I could I snuck out. I ran to the hill and Cedric was there as usual.
‘Cedric wake up.’ I said. ‘They are coming for you.’

Author Bio
It has been a long journey from depressed, lonely and alcoholic farm-boy to internationally known, award winning author. Using insight he gained from his own struggle he helped hundreds of individuals move from misery to joy during the many years he worked in the human services field. During his journey he also taught many other care-givers how to improve their ability to help others.
During this time he became a practiced listener and a good story teller.
Now he divides his time between his small farm and writing inspiring and educational books.
His writings have helped many learn the skills needed to:
Reduce feelings of worthlessness and isolation
Increase feelings of happiness
Conquer addictions
Reach new levels of spiritual understanding
Improve relationships
Find hope
He has long lived by the motto “Inspire Joyful Sanity”. So, what the heck does that mean? Well, the inspire part is obvious. His definition of sanity is to understand and accept the universe and the rules that make it work. The joyful part refers to the idea that joy is the default state of the human mind. The idea is that as you understand and accept the rules of the universe you remove the barriers to being in a joyful state. His goal is to inspire joyful sanity in himself and others.
His first books were inspirational self-help. However, all his life he has been a fan of sci-fi and fantasy. Rebecca’s Initiation is his first attempt at writing fiction and the first of a planned series called Redemption.

***
Excerpt:
The rain woke her up. Small drops blew onto her cheeks and ran down her neck. Overhead, the network of branches shielded her from the bulk of it, but the wind blew the moisture in from the side.
Reluctant to leave, she clung to the stone and looked on the image of her father’s face. Having familiarized herself again with his features, the representation disappointed her. Too still, too stern, the eyes too vacant. This was nothing more than someone’s idea of her father. Looking at it now, she realized it was entirely inadequate. If she had the chance, she would do it over, carve it in a way that would reveal her father’s true spirit.
The rain streamed over the sculpture, pushing dirt trails past the ears, over the cheeks and down the chin. With the edge of her shirt, Adrienna wiped the face clean and then hurried across the grounds and ducked under the largest tree near the center. For a time she crouched there, undisturbed, but then something snapped off to the left. She jumped, senses alert.
The Tucadorr. It could have heard her screams. How could she have been so stupid?
She held her breath, but when the animal emerged, it was much smaller than the beast that haunted her dreams. Like an overweight river rodent it waddled through the bushes, making its way toward her. She guessed it to be about four hands high, its elbows on the ground, paws drawn up under its chin. Powerful back legs sprung forward in hops, after which it would wait, look around, and clack its long nails together.
It had no tail. Gray, wiry hair lay matted with clumps of mud, streams of dirty water pouring off its belly and onto the ground. Strings of drool escaped the side of its mouth. It drew its lips wide, uncovering pointed teeth, and then puckered them forward again. Thick eyes bulged from the side of its head, each eyeball moving independently of the other.
Adrienna stared. The creature was unlike any she had seen before, but still something felt familiar about it. Afraid to move lest she draw its attention, she remained by the tree while it shuffled forward, intent on its path. At one point she worried it was coming toward her, but then it passed by, neither eye seeming to take notice of her. On it went, heading east, stopping after every three hops. Ahead, she saw a dark shadow in its path, rectangular shaped, a shallow depression in the ground. Was this where it sought shelter in the storms?
The animal hurried forward now, no longer hopping but wobbling back and forth at an ungainly pace. The tongue slung about, elbows working like paws over the ground. At the hole it gazed hungrily for a moment and then tore into the dirt, claws slicing, hips protruding into the air. Sloppy mud slung wide behind it, some landing with a slap on other markers. On and on it worked, hopping about now and then to send the dirt another direction. Adrienna watched in horrid fascination. In the time it would take her to bathe, the creature had dug a deep, square hole.
A grave.

Author Bio
C. M. Story has always been a fan of fantasy in all its many forms, including the kind she frequently indulged in during boring lectures in school. She didn't try her hand at penning her own stories, however, until long after she'd gotten her Bachelor's degree in music.
Once she sold her first short story, she got a writing job and never looked back. Today she runs a successful freelance writing and editing business out of her home in Idaho, and frequently travels to other inspiring places with her trusty laptop in tow. And yes, despite rumors to the contrary, "Story" is her real last name.
"Rise of the Sidenah" was inspired by gothic architecture, a tune by "The Calling," and the idea that following the heart may cause pain, but is the only way to truly fulfill one's purpose in life.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?
Yes! But I love character-driven stories; it makes for a more emotional connection, I believe.
What is your favourite food?
Probably Monolian BBQ
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Definitely a night owl!

Not yet, but I hope to add in different locations in the future (as soon as I’m able to travel more).
Do you listen to music while writing?
Yes, instrumentals!
Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?
It’s more than meets the eye—it’s definitely more than a typical fantasy young adult novel. It’s about two sisters who get involved in a curse that cuts far deeper than they’d ever imagined.
What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?
Too much to write down, haha. The main thing I’ve learned is to read and write daily, especially through writer’s block, and never give up.
Is there anything you would do differently?
Maybe take more time with some of my previous books.
Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?
Everything in my life influences me. Writing-wise, I’ve been influenced by writers such as J.K. Rowling, Christopher Paolini, and Daniel Handler.

Don’t give up! Things take time! I’m still in the uphill battle, but it takes so much time and energy.
What are three words that describe you?
Creative, passionate, and caring.
What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?
My favorite book is The Paris Wife.

Diamante Lavendar has been in love with reading since she was a child. She spent many hours listening to her mother read to her when she was young. As she grew older, she enjoyed reading novels of all genres: horror, fantasy and some romance to name a few.
She began writing in college and published some poetry in anthologies over the years. After her kids were older, she wrote as a form of self expression and decided she wanted to share her stories with others.
Most of her writing is very personal and stems from her own experiences and those of her family and friends. She writes to encourage hope and possibility to those who read her stories.
Diamante believes that everyone should try to leave their own positive mark in the world, to make it a better place for all. Writing is the way that she is attempting to leave her mark—one story at a time.
