Author Interview: Thirst by RP Channing
Author Bio
R P Channing started writing three years ago, but never published anything even after churning out over a million words of fiction. Thirst: Blood of my Blood is the first book he dared to publish. When asked why, he said, “Because it’s the first thing I wrote that my wife actually enjoyed reading.” When not hammering away (most literally) at his keyboard, he can be found buried in a book, reading anything from romance to horror to young adult to non-fiction to comedy.
Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?
I do a bit of both, although I tend to let the story flow more often than not. I've tried outlining, plotting beforehand. It always fails.
Do your characters ever want to take over the story?
All the time! I start writing and then they develop minds of their own. There's no controlling them.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Night owl by far. Sometimes I'll fall into an "early-to-bed" rhythm, but it never lasts.
Do you listen to music while writing?
No. I did once but I found it distracts from the mood of the story. An author is trying to create a mood, and if you're feeling something from the music then that mood is not coming from your book.
Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?
Thirst is a YA novel about ghosts, demons, vampires and witches. It's a paranormal romance with a touch of scary in it. At its core, it's a romance, and the depth of the love between the two main characters took a lot of work to put together.
Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?
I take something out of every book I read. And I always try and look for what's good in a book rather than poke at what's bad. That's the only way to truly learn something. There are a million ways to do something wrong, and only one way to do it right. So you need to focus on what's right when reading books from other authors so you can do it yourself in your own stories.
What are three words that describe you?
Obstinate. Bullheaded. Tenacious. (Oh, wait, those are synonyms. Oh well...)

After a near fatal accident (and getting cheated on by her 'boyfriend'), and beating up the lead cheerleader (with whom the boyfriend cheated...), and being labeled as having 'issues' in her school because she, uhm, sees ghosts, Kira is left with two choices:

Brought up in an abusive home, Cory quickly falls into a life of disreputable behavior. After his third offense (which was prompted by a girl, as usual - he has a weakness) he's left with two choices:
1. Be tried as an adult and share a cell with a guy named Bubba (he thinks...)
Or
2. Go to Starkfield Academy, which Cory is pretty sure is run by vampires. But, hey, at least he'll get an education.
He chooses the latter...
It's at Starkfield that Kira meets Cory Rand, a boy with an insatiable Rage who sees ghosts, too. As well as other things, other things from his past, things that confuse him, things like fire and witches and demons.
Things he's always ignored.
Until now.

Oh, she tried not to think too much of the almost unknown senior who awkwardly asked her out to the senior prom. It was unfortunate he chose the morning her father stomped out of the house with a suitcase. The traumatic departure continued out on the front lawn where mothers with kindergartners stood on the sidewalk with strollers waiting for their oldest to board the bus.
Her mother clutched a skillet in her right hand because his abrupt announcement caught her in the middle of unloading the dishwasher. Her mother baited him by telling him that running back to his skanky ho would result in some incurable STD and a painful death.
The nearby mothers took a step back while covering their attentive children’s ears. Those with more than one child had more of a challenge as far as ear coverage.
Her father, halfway in his car, yelled back. “You ruined my life. Everything you touch you destroyed.” Catching sight of Stella, he added, “I wish you’d never been born.”
Most people at the bus stop probably thought he was talking to her mother. Apparently, that was the impression her mother received too, because she hurled the skillet at the car, dinging the door. Her father’s face suffused with red, and he opened his mouth, but no words came out. Instead, he closed the car door and sped off.
Her mother, suddenly aware of her audience, dusted off her hands, announced to the listeners, “Good riddance.” Her actions announced it was her plan to chase off her husband with a frying pan before work. Stella stayed on the front stoop staring at the departing car, knowing he’d been staring at her, wishing she’d never been born.
It was hard to stop thinking about it. So when Kevin Hardesty asked her if she’d go to the prom with him, she didn’t answer, barely even heard the words as she turned away afraid she might start crying again. Apparently, not quickly enough, because it was all over school that the idea of going to prom with Kevin sent her into an enormous crying fit by the end of the day. When the gossip finally reached her via Leah, she wanted to find Kevin and explain. She never had the chance. He hanged himself that night from the local park swing set. The police found him near midnight when making their nightly rounds.

A bit of both. I have a plan, but it often changes as I write.

Yes! But I love character-driven stories; it makes for a more emotional connection, I believe.

Probably Monolian BBQ

Definitely a night owl!
Where do you dream of travelling to and why?
Japan. It’s my minor in college right now and I’ve always had a fondness for it. I also used to teach ESL to Japanese students in Japan over Skype through DMM Eikawa.
Do distant places feature in your books?
Not yet, but I hope to add in different locations in the future (as soon as I’m able to travel more).
Do you listen to music while writing?
Yes, instrumentals!
Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?
It’s more than meets the eye—it’s definitely more than a typical fantasy young adult novel. It’s about two sisters who get involved in a curse that cuts far deeper than they’d ever imagined.
What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?
Too much to write down, haha. The main thing I’ve learned is to read and write daily, especially through writer’s block, and never give up.
Is there anything you would do differently?
Maybe take more time with some of my previous books.
Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?
Everything in my life influences me. Writing-wise, I’ve been influenced by writers such as J.K. Rowling, Christopher Paolini, and Daniel Handler.
Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?
Don’t give up! Things take time! I’m still in the uphill battle, but it takes so much time and energy.
What are three words that describe you?
Creative, passionate, and caring.
What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?
My favorite book is The Paris Wife.
